anti-war protest

nice to know all americans aren't screaming for blood:

I went to the powerful and patriotic anti-war rally and march at UC
Berkeley this afternoon as part of a National Day of Action
simultaneously
taking place at some 130 college campuses around the country. The Day
of
Action was organized around three points of unity: stop the war, stop
the
racist scapegoating, and protect civil liberties. It was a very
spirited
affair with perhaps 4 or 5 thousand people of exceptional ethnic
diversity
holding signs, waving banners, chanting, clapping, praising and
cheering
Representative Barbara Lee (the rep for Berkeley/Oakland and the *only*
member of Congress---that's 1 out of 535---to oppose the war), and
listening to speakers such as the poet/writer June Jordan, Kevin
Danaher of
Global Exchange, a Berkeley City Council member, as well as some
professors, students, and other activists. There was much talk about
anti-war, anti-imperialism, anti-racism, anti-Bush, anti-violence,
anti-terrorism, not being hateful and vengeful, not killing other
innocent
people, not dishonoring the dead and injured by creating more dead and
injured in other countries, not being against America or its flag as
opposed to its government, not turning a tragedy into a war, and not
replacing a Middle Eastern Islamic Jihad with a US/Euro Christian
Crusade.
We said no to war, no to racism, and yes to civil liberties. And we
made
our voices loud and clear!

No, not all americans are baying for blood. Check out http://www.michaelmoore.com for a good perspective. He's been driving to NY since last Tuesday and posting on the way.

Apparently lest than 5% of Americans have a passport! That is scary. But, I suppose it goes some way to explain why we keep seeing folk on the news sayong such things as:

"This was an attack on all that America stands for; freedom, truth and liberty" (Sky, last night).

This weird insularity means that, although it was an attack on what America stands for, Americans cannot see that to the outside world they do not stand for anything like freedom, truth and liberty (surely, freedom covers that).

American ambassador on Newsnight:

"I. Cannot. Believe. That. Anyone. Could. Possibly. Hate. America."
(read in best Chuck Heston voice)

Funny you should mention this cos on my recent flight home from JFK there was a couple without a passport and after asking me if I thought they would get in to Ireland I had to say "you're white and American you should probably have no problems" and guess what? They didn't.
Seems all immigration is good as long as you are white.
What was that about racisms?
