Joe Simpson is an amazing guy alright.. you having a mountaineering day lala? The matter of fact way he said that the guy who cut the rope on him was 'quite right' to do so, even though it meant dropping him into hell for a week. Tough man.

One of my heroes - Michael Young (became lord young of dartington). If you think politicians are all wasters.. read about this guy. Amazing.

Have you read "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer? Another excellant mountaineering book.

I'll be reading "The Beckoning Silence" after the exams are over.

ah yes, i've been meaning to read that book. also meaning to read "between a rock and a hard place" (ghastly - the guy who severed his own arm with a swiss army knife).
what's the beckoning silence about? i love mountaineering books; been trying to get some stuff on tenzing norgay too.

You should definately get a copy of into thin air. Great book and good insight into the comercialisation of Everest attempts.

I've cheated but here ya go, there's a copy waiting in Dublin to be read when I get back, looks really good:

"In arguably his best book since Touching the Void, Joe Simpson wraps together a lifetime of mountaineering experience and friendships, relating what he's learned from the challenges, personal tragedy and absurdities of the sport.

The heart of The Beckoning Silence grows out of Simpson's discussion with fellow climber, Ray Delaney, about the final "tick list" climbs he must do before he can quit mountaineering for good. Through his account of the seductive attraction of the Eiger's North Face and its history, as well as his own attempt on it, Simpson reveals the inner truth of climbing, exploring the power of the mind and the frailty of the body.

But there's more to Joe than just extraordinary climbing experiences. Hysterically funny anecdotes; rants about perceived travesties, including the discovery of George Mallory's body; and a grippingly personal description of his reaction to the news of his mother's death add depth and complexity to this tale-telling book."

Big swingin mickey, I used to walk up the hellfire club from the carpark every sunday. So did my dog and she was only tiny.

They aint exactly heros but I encounter people everyday who are dealing with more adversity than I could fathom. I feel really lucky to meet em.
