Sir, – Now that the Occupy Dame Street camp has been dismantled by gardaí (Breaking News, March 8th), the Central Bank plaza will be available for binge drinking ahead of the St Patrick’s Day parade.Thank goodness for health and safety issues. – Yours, etc,
PATRICK O’BYRNE,
Shandon Crescent,
Phibsborough,
Dublin 7.
Mr Varadkar said the St Patrick’s Day festival was “a huge draw” for tourists. “What I’d hope that they would do is to move the camp for a couple of days – which has been done in other cities.”

On the face of it, the facts are truly shocking. Here's a man of 71, and his 63-year-old wife being ejected from their home by bailiffs. Out on the side of the street with nowhere to go, in such destitution that they have to set up a leaky tent outside their former home, the couple huddle together for warmth while their neighbours look on in outrage. Meanwhile, the brutal thugs hired by the banks have control of the family home where all the old couple's treasured possessions lie unprotected from curious, grubby fingers.
An appalling scenario, reminiscent of the worst excesses of nineteenth-century landlordism in Ireland, as the man himself, Brendan Kelly, so tellingly pointed out. Innocent poor people thrown out on the side of the road.
Well, maybe not.
The Occupy lads are picketing the Dublin city sheriff's office in Temple Bar over the eviction of that couple in Killiney.
The couple were evicted from their 3.75 million euro mansion. They were given notice 2 years ago to get their shit sorted and they didn't. This despite the fact that they own 21 other properties.
Fuck them and fuck the Occupy movement.
maybe it just proves they are thick. or maybe it was secret service, as like anonymous, you can just say you are in occupy and you are in it.
I'd say they just needed something to protest about and latched onto this BEFORE the news broke about how wealthy the couple were.
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2012/0421/1224315011206.htmlSympathy came from an unlikely source yesterday when members of the Occupy Dame Street movement visited the house to express their solidarity with the couple.
Mrs Kelly thanked the protesters, who said they would offer every assistance to her and to anybody else who found themselves in danger of eviction.
One protester, Seán Ryan, said the number of homes the couple owned was “irrelevant”.
“Do we define these people by their net worth?” he asked.
So is Occupy driven by hipsters?
