I just broke my bike, I was coming onto my street and dropped a ton of gears in one go with the, shifty paddle thing, that makes the gears go down, in opposed to the clicky switch that makes them go up, I may *may* have been a little heavy with it... anyway the whole chain convulses and locks, then like a beast in the dying throws, spasm and release and there is a loud clunk and a bump

so the arm bit that moves the gears at the back wheel has come clean off, it's all sheered metal and twisted bits, so I assume I've done it in good and proper

is it possible to just replace this? I have a strong feeling it won't be and this will be an entire new gear system, and given that I've only bought the bike in Jan second hand for peanuts (well peanuts for a decent bike, a lot for me) it will be not worth it and I'll have too just dump it and buy another stupid bike

*sigh*

anyone any experience with replacing this sort of thing?

dudes, I'm so bummed out...

Does your bike have a replaceable gear hangar? That's the bit that holds the derailleur onto the frame? It's usually a small aluminum piece.
If so that will need replaced, possibly the derailleur, and maybe even the chain.
Can you take a picture of the damage?

You should be able to get a new derailleur put on for under €40
Maybe less.
I doubt you need a new bike. Did the derailleur go into the wheel and damage it? That often happens in these cases.
If not, it doesn't sound too bad.

I will do in the morning, yeah, thanks Gary!

I think the derailer itself twisted and broke off, some of it is attached to the bike, so of it is wrapped in newspaper in my hallway... it's dark out so I can't get a good look

could they just replace the derailer, if it is removable, and hook it up to the cables that are on the bike already? My first thoughts are that would be the dream

thanks for the reply dude!

sweet! don't think it hit the wheel, I think I cycled over it

this is good positive stuff fellas, much appreciated

I bloody love that bike... the only upside is it didn't happen while bombing around that suicide series of turns around the bleedin' horse to harcourt street...

here's the bit that fell off

look away if oil and bike parts make you squimish

That looks pretty fucked allright.
It's probably gone into the wheel to do that,so give your wheel a spin to make sure it's not buckled.
Back to the hangar,is it bent/broken? even if it's only bent,i'd replace it. it'll be dramatically weakened I would imagine, given the damage to the derailleur. And I'd have a look at the chain, often the few links that were caught up in the damage can be bent. It is often possible to bend them back into shape though.

any suggestions on good decent honest bike repair folks?

I'm in Rathmines

I got the bike cheap a few weeks ago, I wouldn't be surprised if this was on the cards, the chain had come off about three times since I got, but I was (in hindsight) probably being heavy with the gears... not used to having so many working gears, last bike had first and top gear, that was it...

Dunno who to fix it where you live, but it probably happenned because either the limit screws were off,or more likely, the derailleur/hangar were bent a bit knocking the allignment off.
If somethings not right it always pays off to get it sorted before the damage is caused.

ha ha, that mech is bollixed.
Even the guide wheels are broken. That's pretty good going.
Like the lads are saying, you should be alright once you get whatever is left out of the hanger on the frame. Then you can pick up a rear mech and throw it on.

You might need to straighten the hanger first though.

There used to be a bike shop in Rathmines. At least I worked in a shop there for about a week, and either got fired or walked out due to it being a bit shit. Run by some wanker who thought he was a hard case martial arts fighter.
I'm not sure if its still shit, but you could put your nose in and they probably would do something. There was another one near Rathgar. A good one.
Jesus. I forget all these places now.

Fuck all help.
Macdonalds was it? They weren;t wankers anyway.
Then there was another one in Dundrum. Joe Daly's. That's not much use for you but it was ok for me.

Then there is a place, Square wheel, on Temple Lane.

I only mention that place in Rathmines because it was so shit they have to have changed management at this point, and its handy for you.

edi just saw your bike there. Has it ever been washed? Jaysus. Bitta lube and a wash boss.
Hanger should be grand. It comes off if its not.

Probably a job for the shop seeing as you're clearly a spanner.

edit, just while we're at it sure, fuckCcycleogical. Of whatever its called.

yo I cycle like I live it, to the maxxx

these dudes are up the road, seem like nice chaps, if a bit full on and into upselling and stuff ('of course you'll need the carbon-titanium forks' 'I will?!') but they're close by

ha ha ha! it's totally a shop job, I would not cycle anything I had "repaired" myself into busy traffic! be great to know the in's and out's of it all, but right now it's just the quickest, cheapest way in and around town

yeah the bike is manky, been meaning to get around to that... *cough*

yeah that thinkBike place is new. Purpose Built Repair shop and all. No half measures.

There used to be another one in Rathmines a few years ago.
thank fuck its gone.
I'm trying to remember the prick that owned it. Mother of god. he had pictures of himself up all over the shop, enduring pain, stoicly.
Seriously. Standing on nails. Hot coals maybe. Various demented things. And none of them there had the vaguest idea about bikes.
I'm just trying to remember if they fired me or I walked. I usually got fired after I told everyone they were cunts.

edit, here, what you can do is, get an old t shirt, and some engine oil, and a crap container, and sort of wash the chain with the oil on the rag. It will disolve away the mank, and then you throw the rag and get another one and wipe it with new oil, and then leave it. Any lube will do, just to cut that dirt.

Or you can just use petrol, and then lube. You'll need to get scrubbing a bit though with that chain.

Looks like the hanger is shot too Fiachra.

Replace it now because if you straighten it it could go into the spokes under pressure and then you are looking at another new mech, hanger and replacement spokes. Thats a 100 euro easy with parts and labour.

Shouldn't cost you more than 60 for a new hanger and a replacement rear mech similar to what you have.

But if you can stretch another 10 - 15 euro put an Alivio or an Acera mech on as the bodies on these are way stiffer than than those cheap megadrive mechs that you just broke. They are plastic composite and have a tendency to get caught in wheels under shifting pressure.

doesn't anyone clean their bike anymore? My frame is manky dirty but I always take care to make sure the whole drive train is clean.

commuting solutions in Rathmines are sound heads. They did me a turn once in an hour of need. I recommend them. They're beside the Aldi there, up towards the Rathmines Inn.
