My Forum is being spammed.help (1 Viewer)

Well, its not really.

But there are a few registered users on the forum who have never posted and have no info about themselves except for their websites.
And their websites are all selling generic viagra, bird flu antiseptic and other such shite. They're not really bothering anyone, but its annoying to look at. I know of another band website that got flooded with this sort of registered user over time.

Whats goin on exactly?

I assume its some sort of automated thing, but If I block them and their names, IP addresses and host names, will that stop em registering on the forum?
Or do these people have a limitless supply of these things?
Or will they get angry and spam me more?

Just wanna figure out exactly whats happening before I do anything about it.

Advice would be great.

probably using your site to increase their pagerank in google

every profile they register on every site, with a link back to their spam site in their profile, works in their benefit when google updates its index.

you could block the originating IP's and stuff, but perhaps the easiest thing to do would be add in a nofollow tag to the url tags?

to stop them registering with automated stuff use image verification.

If its phpbb go to the options and add in image verification

Requires users enter a code defined by an image when registering.

I assume thats what image verifcation is

I think that image verification worked fine, the spamming has stopped as far as I can tell. ssoooooooooooooo

I went through the users on RSJ's forum last week and deleted about fifteen of these dudes. It's oddly annoying.
