why do people insist on using this word? when used by a promoter, it's usually a misrepresentation of a band or artist, and when used by a band or artist themselves, it's an indication of their lack of imagination, willingness to take shit, inability to prioritise artistic over commercial merit, and general run-of-the-mill-ness. it's an insult to the intelligence of the listener and to the creative intentions of the artist. what's more, it's an ugly, uninformative, inelegant word. i have a rule of thumb where i assume that anything that uses the word 'unsigned' will be mediocre. sometimes i'm wrong, but usually it's spot on. you'd be doing yourself a great deal of help if you never used it again. thanks.

One of my favourite interviews ever is with the composer Roger Redgate. The journo questions roger about the 'complexity' label which is frequently used to describe his music. He argues that there are vast differences between him and other so-called 'complexity' composers and that the term is lazy and misleading. The slightly miffed journo asks "what label would you use then?" to which roger replies, "music."
