I think there's a difference between rice krispie buns and cakes. Buns are smaller versions of the big cake and fit in to those little cup cake holder things. At least that's the distinction for me.

But then I'm a culchie who's been living on the northside of dublin for most of the last decade so that might have a part to play too

The top one is clearly a cake of rice krispies. As is the bottom one. I'd call them both rice krispie cakes. I have however seen the bottom one called a rice-krispie bar in many cafés.
