Im an idiot when it comes to electric guitars and was wondering how much hum should i expect off my mexican tele. When i touch the silver on the guitar it stops. I recently got the problem fixed but there is still a slight buzz (although far less now). This is normal though right? need my piece of mind

ah!bing its a single coil pickup so i guess that might be why. Or am I wrong?

funny a friend of mine was saying he has similar problems with his mex tele and believed it to be the shitty quality chrome used in the guitar. The earth should be atttached to these chrome parts, generally the bridge plate, but if the chrome, or rather chrome plating is a bit crap it's not going to earth the guitar properly... there is not enough chrome plating there to earth the guitar and disipate the signal.Thus the hum, and thus it's dissapearance when you put your finger on the metal parts (I.E. earth the guitar)

I was sort of amazed at this as an answer, but the dude was pretty confident that this was the cause. Don't know what you could do about it, google about a bit and see if it's a real problem. Then maybe replace the bridge plate with an American Fender plate... *shrug*

Yeah, it's the earth. You can either :
1. Open it up and make sure the earth wire is hooked up properly
Or
2. Get someone else to do it. If you bring it into a guitar shop (the one you bought it from is best) they'll be able to help you out.

well let us know how it turns out, ya? I just bought a highway 1 tele, and it may need something like this after I beat the hell out of it for a few years.
