I saw 1/2 of a subtitled one. The person I was watching it with couldn't take any more. Now I need to go rent it again so I can see the end. I hate not seeing the end of something I start watching.

Yeah version i saw had subs.

Not a bad film - a little pretentious but over all not too shoddy.

i watched a subtitled version too. yeah it was quite good. the last half hour is rough going. the director is helming a hellraiser remake apparently. interesting to see what he'll do with that

saw this tonight, fairly tough going i must admit, good enough film i guess, trying to figure out the point of it, maybe its about people watching extreme gore scenes hence the "witness" reference at the end? fuck knows. anyway, its bar none the hardest film i ever watched and i thought i was fairly hardy to horror/gore films, almost turned it off several times, was in a bit of a daze after, felt strangely disgusted with myself for having seen it for some reason i can't explain.

I hate the term 'torture porn' - just another media created title to dismiss horror films. They're just exploitation films (and that what the makers used to call em too) - they've been around a lot longer than Hostel etc.

bang on.I came out of seeing it in the IFI last year and was genuinely fucked up by it in a way I don't think any film I've ever seen before has done.

I really don't think it was that hard a watch - it's no Irreversible that's for sure.
The final act, although probably the hardest part to stomach, had its bite softened by the nature of the religious aspect which to me killed the whole film. It was a bit too simplistic or something. Religious cult, death, kidnapping girls blah blah.
Yeah it's grusome and nasty but the story, especially in the final act, felt too simple and silly to support the weight of the film or maybe of what the film was try to say.
Dunno - maybe I'll watch it again but I really don't think I missed anything first time. I seem to be out of sync with what's deemed good or worthy in horror these days.

It's really down to that whole middle section - the first part is gore for gore's sake, the end is just..well..shit, but that whole midle section - the pacing, the repetition, the starkness..I mean it's what, like 20-25 minutes of near dialogueless drawn out beatings? I thought it was never going to end. That section alone was far more horrific than anything I've seen in years.

Yeah that's the section I was talking about and it's the hardest part to watch.
In fairness theres an add on TV every night about the cycle of abuse involving a girl getting hit and going to jail that I find just as hard to watch.

I watched it with subs. Thought It was fairly good. Didn't find it hard to watch really. I was dissapointed with the ending because I was expecting something smart, philosophical, and new. Maybe an insight into the writers idea on the afterlife something something. But they took the 'leave it to the viewers imagination' approach which is just a lazy cop-out.
