nah it must be connected to a wireless network with an internet connection. If you don't have wireless, you can buy a nintendo usb dongle which will let you go through your standard
connection.

You can apparently type in a WEP code too if you are on a secure network like eircom or whatever

DS has wireless built in. If you have a wireless modem you can play online.
If you don't have a wireless modem, nintendo are selling a usb dongle that you plug into your PC to play online with.

my parents don't have wireless so that will give me practice time before i take on the world when i get home.

in the UK nintendo have signed tons of deals with coffee shops, hotels etc so you can play your DS all over the place.
Not sure what Irish companies are doing it

oh jeez... i started playin animal crossing on the gamecube about this time last year and had to stop at xmas. it sucked my brainz out. i might as well end my life now...
