robbed this off scamp blog, I know opening is booked out but possibly others are not yet, its free, love that place.

The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, is running a Manga Anime Weekend starting Friday 1st February.

Of particular interest is the talk by Paul Gravett on the Saturday. Paul was founder of Escape Magazine, playing an integral role in giving a focus to the burgeoning British Comics scene in the 80’s as well as being a forerunner in translating many European comics into English. He is a contributor to The Guardian and The Comics Journal and an author of many books on comics. Not to be missed.

Wow, I'd like to go to this.

Not as much as I'd have liked to have gone to the Clamp exhibition I just missed in Paris though.

Was thinking about going to see Paprika. Anyone know if they're showing it subbed?

oh, i just got my name down for opening, but maybe if you chance your arm..they might be ok to let you in for some ..?

Sorry folks, the whole thing booked out over a week ago. Capacity was limited to 80 by the CBL health & safety people, and they absolutely can't let anyone else in. Sorry to anyone who didn't get to book.

And to answer a question asked earlier, all three films will be shown in Japanese, subtitled in English. And of the two Astro Boy episodes being shown, one will be dubbed, one subtitled.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, the schedule was updated yesterday. It's here:

nice work photino on the whole weekend
Your talk was excellent,
funny and informative!
i enjoyed angels egg, i think being hungover actually helped

we're going to try and get photon to give the talk again at lazybird and show a movie too. i think there were a few people who missed it and would like to hear it. me for one.

Right, I'm not involved in this particular event, but figured I'd pass on the following PR from the CBL to this thread anyway, as there might be some interest. (By the way, these screenings are all free of charge, with no booking required.)

What's on in the Chester Beatty Library for March 2008

Saturday 8 March - Japanese animation film screenings in association with the Embassy of Japan.

11am The Castle of Cagliostro (Kaliosutoro no Shiro, 92 mins). Director Hayao Miyazaki (1979). PG. Lupin III is a famous Japanese comic made into a series of animated TV programmes and movies. This film is packed with action scenes and humour.

2pm Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe, 30 mins). Director: Makoto Shinkai (2002). PG. Shinkai made this short full-digital animation almost single-handedly, and acquired a reputation as an up an coming creator of the post-Miyazaki generation. This is the story of Mikako and Noboru who are parted from each other in space and time.

2.30pm The Place Promised In Our Early Days (Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho, 95 mins). Director Makoto Shinkai (2004). For 12+. This is Shinkai's first full-length feature animation and it won the Mainichi Animation Film Award over Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle, which was released in the same year. Shinkai's acclaimed characteristics as a creator, especially the beauty of the pictures, are taken to a new level in this film.

*Films are in Japanese with English subtitles. (Admission Free)

For details regarding the films please contact the Embassy of Japan, tel: 202 8305
