BOREK, aged 23 years, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 4 ½ years imprisonment for his part in the public order disturbances on 18 June 1999. During disorder in Upper Thames Street, EC2 Police were under attack from crowds when BOREK, an American National born in New York, came through the crowds and swung a builders shovel hitting a police officer with great force on the top of his head. The police officer was in full public order uniform, including protective helmet, the helmet was split by the blow and he received neck and spinal injuries. BOREK then disappeared back into the crowd.

The injured officer, PC Jef HUTCHBY, a Metropolitan Police officer was not fit to return to duty for 6 months after the incident and to this day still suffers some pain in his neck and back as a result of the attack.

J18 in London saw both peaceful protest and full on riot. Scores of people were injured including lots of press. Lots of otherwise peaceful people also fought back against police that day when riot police attacked the crowds. True there were other fights going on as well. It did after all turn into a riot in the end - a proper riot, not some small clash which got labelled a riot.
