You're seperating the video and audio streams of the file.... not converting it to mp3. I think the audio stream could be mp3 in it's present format. I'm probably wrong.

There's a wizard under the file menu that goes through the process on VLC.

Or you can get virtualdub from www.doom9.org

There's other easier tools as well, but those are both free.

Or be lo-fi: get audacity, make sure your audio record setup is not on microphone so that audacity will record whatever audio goes through your system. Hit record on audacity, press play on video, stop when necessary. Export as mp3 if you have the lame encoder.

Oh and make sure your system sounds are switched off so you don't get a microsoft 'boing' in the middle of the song.
