hey ho

my dad is heading to london & germany for a bit
and is visiting archives

is there any handheld scanner that anyone can recommend
I know early ones were notoriously shite
I'm not too hung up on text recognition (but it'd be very handy)

cheers

haven't seen one in ages - there are no scanners available in the archives themselves?
easiest option would be to take photos, but god knows what the light levels might be like. you may have problems with blur or too shallow a depth of field.

i used work in an archive before they figured out just how hung-over and useless i was. bringing a camera into an archive is a big no-no, you'd need to do it stealth style. best contact in advance about using a scanner too, archives are pricks basically, and their sole reason for existence is their unwillingness to share. also some things are just too fragile to handle without gloves in temperature/humidity controlled environment, so if he's let use the scanner make sure he brings it in some gay looking bag so it looks like he's a pro, archives are pricks but sometimes you'll find lenience in certain staff on a quite day.

a) decided to not get one, cos there doesn't seem to be any good ones worth getting
b) thanks ann post, didn't even think of that issue
