Nah if you flash it now you could play online. MS tend to roll out updates twice a year that ban modified machines though. I'd imagine the Spring update thats around the corner will bring with it a wave of bannings.

There's usually workarounds brought out fairly quickly though isn't there?

No. Once your console is blacklisted you can't access any LIVE account on that machine.

You can still play copied games on it of course.

Hmmm.. I don't even want to play online with it, just play it. I can't do it anyway as I need SATA drive connections and what not which I couldn't be arsed getting. It's out in a few days sure..
