Dublin's GPO to close only to rise again as a smart shopping centre

THE GPO in O'Connell Street, Dublin, is to close - as a general post office.
The Government has grand plans to "open it up to a public" in a revamp costing €250m that will turn the inconic building and its huge interior courtyards into a mixed development of museums, restaurants, galleries, shops and performance areas for the arts.

' The scheme, which has been been approved by Dublin City Council, will be 12 to 15 storeys high in places.'

This is very weird - i presume they wouldn't touch any of the original facade?

That link is worth it for this picture:

But really, why do these things always have to have "upmarket apartments" done by "ultra-trendy architects".

Well, skangers don't live in the GPO now in fairness.
Putting people with lots of money to spend in an area doesn’t make it a nice area. Effectively they’re taking a building away from the public that owns it and giving it to some cool rich people that they'd like to get to know.

it's what the volunteers died for, so that we may shop.
and how!

I could just about live with there being galleries and the like in it, but fucking shops and apartments? Bollocks. There's enough fucking shops around there already. If they're going to do anything it should be for the public alone and not so some rich cunts can live in it.

no no no no no.

although - the queen vic building in sydney was converted nicely - but still. dublin has enough shopping malls why another one?

they should turn it into a museum. not about the 1916 rising though, that's boring shit.
they should move the natural history museum there.

I was in the Moore St mall for the first time on Saturday.

Looks like a great place to go if you want to buy some hair or ugly jewellery.

there's an interesting looking reataurant that sells a range of vegan noodles among other things that might be worth further investigation though
