Good songs/crap production?
So many examples of this in the 80's
I'm sure some people would disagree its even a good song but I think
Mad World by Tears for fears is a good example.
As is a lot of early prince.
Anyone think of any more?

Mad World by Tears for fears is a good example.

I think the 'poor' production adds to this song

their later stuff that won all sorts of praise for "production" was awful

The Travelling Wilburys would have been waaay better if Jeff Lynne hadn't been involved

The long and winding road and Across the universe by The Beatles (Phil Spector versions).

Yeah loads of stuff from the 80s, late-period REM songs are overproduced, and the last Mercury Rev album was like teflon, when compared to Yerself Is Steam its astonishing how shitly synthetic it sounds.

The tinny gick that is 'Raw Power' immediately springs to mind. :)

Laughing Len's 'Death Of A Ladies Man' is almost unlistenable thanks to Phil Spector.

First Fiona Apple album is way overproduced.
Bouncing off the Satellites by the B-52's could have been a completely different album if it had been produced properly

I've never liked the sound of any Smiths records, though I will say I'm not much of a fan I can appreciate the songwriting and guitaring, but the bass sounds are awful (IMHO, obviously...) and the drumming generally very processed and dead (to my ears!). I think it's a symptom of the times really... *shrug*
