FREE GigSmart gig (1 Viewer)

Policy? Who mentioned policy? It's is sound. Atendance can clearly be counted.

 Surely only noise level can? I've been to these gigsmart audience participation things before. You can very clearly count attendance at the door; the clap-o-meter device is used because the gigs are mascquerading as talent competitions. Musicianship has nothing to do with these supposed battles of the bands, which is dumb. What do the crappy band with lots of friends do when they get their 'choice slot' in the UCD student bar if none of their friends are UCD students? They bomb, I imagine.

Maybe, Maybe not. They could be a good band too. Let the following explain

I said this a few posts back ......"It's only really a tactic to try get the band to activly promote the gig themselves. On the night, my judgement of clapping wont be defined on who claps with both their hands and their knees, though it may be loud and raucous. It will be a measure of who brought most back into the gig, attendance wise. Thought i realise this is only one way a band can contribute to a gig they play, and I realise that people may think other way are much more important (i.e. musicianship), this is a way that serves an immediate purpose. The sustainment of these gigs. Without that, I'd have nothing to build on anyway and so now hopefully you understand my recourse to this seemingly fallable method of choosing a winner."

Sigh. But it doesn't matter if they're a good band or not does it. Being a good band isn't what matters at these Gigsmart things- it's whoever can rope in the most punters.

Thats a bit harsh. If they're crap they wouldn't be on the bill but being a great song writer doesn't necessarilly make one a great marketeer.

And at the end of the day, obliging friends will only get you so far in the music business.

Too true unfortunately but if people want to play gigs they've gotta help make the night sustainable and if everybody is a tops artist then the phenomenon of audience transfer may well occur. I think thats as much as can be done for them at this level beyond the usual promo activity.

I don't envy singer-songwriter solo performers much. Its a way tougher gig and the environs of Dublin are deluged with loads of them.

Listen, as I've said before, a singer-songwriter is just the singular of band. It's not a genre. Jaysus, Lemmy from motorhead is a singer-songwriter.

Ah, I give up.

He he! I didn't mean that! I should've said that there are a lot of a similar quality chasing the same gigs!
