i know there are a number of ucd students who use this board so this is directed at them. for anyone else, sorry if this distrubs you viewing pleasure.
today the su president (aonghus hourihane) went on the pat kenny to condemn the participants in mondays reclaim the streets and praise the gardai's reaction.
anyway this is a letter sent to him by one of the other su officers (bernard cantillion). He has suggested (and i would likewise) that you either write a letter to aonghus, at [email protected] or copy this one and sign your name to it.
Mr. Hourihane,
I think that the comments you made this morning on the Pat Kenny Show were an absolute disgrace. Are you the President of a Student Union or a representative of the Gardaí. Can you not accept that the police disgraced themselves. How dare you say that members of our union should have been at home studying for their exams instead of involved in a protest. The demonstrators were attacked by the police who removed their numbers and started to beat up people. It is an indictment of you as a Union representative that you sided with the police rather than those among your members who were assaulted by members of the Gardaí. Do you really believe that what we have all seen on our television screens and in our newspapers over the last day could be construed as reasonable force. To suggest that because members of the Socialist Workers were present that they would necessarily be violent and behind any provocation which may have happened is shameful and shows your prejudice and naivete. Just because people are on the extreme left does not justify them being attacked by members of the security services. I do not share or support their views on many issues, but what I saw is usually called thuggery and it came from the so called Guardians of the Peace. I share the opinions that Ivana Bacik expressed this morning. It is astounding that a Union representative could believe the police above his members. Shame!
