“To Willie is more than a curatorial feat; Phosphorescent reaches down to the pain.” – New York Times

“Matthew Houck, better known as the voice of Phosphorescent, has given Willie Nelson (and the rest of us) a gorgeous, shimmering gift in To Willie.” – Prefix Magazine

“The love is in Pride's lyrics, which escape the shackles of their occasional poetic flourishes to be unmysterious and self-explanatory, totally broken and totally vulnerable, and therefore unique.” - Pitchfork

In 1975 Willie Nelson recorded the album To Lefty from Willie, ten songs in which Nelson pays homage to Lefty Frizell, reinterpreting his favorites from the Frizzell catalog and stamping them with his own unique voice, reshaping them into his own new classics.

Now Phosphorescent has done the same for Willie Nelson by bringing us To Willie. Here, Matthew Houck has selected eleven of his favorite Willie Nelson songs and does much more than just simply cover them. He hasn’t selected the greatest hits, but rather digs deep, offering renditions of hidden Nelson gems and lost classics. The songs collected here seem cracked from Phosphorescent's proprietary mold with Matthew Houck's unmistakable voice leading the way. They feel lived in, they feel weathered and they feel just like Phosphorescent.

Phosphorescent's 2007 breakthrough album Pride sounded best at the latest of hours -- it was narcotic, dreamy and fraught. Following the release of this insomniac masterpiece, Houck toured relentlessly with a solid rock band, turning the meditations of Pride into another beast entirely. Loose and booze-fueled, Phosphorescent put on electrifying performances night after night in which Houck stepped out as confident front-man and band leader.

Without question, those hard-living months on the road greatly impacted the To Willie sessions. Houck's swagger and confidence shines through like never before - on songs like "Reasons to Quit” and "I Gotta Get Drunk” Phosphorescent rumbles with a soulful groove that was a fixture of the live show, but was never touched upon in previous recordings. Recalling the finest moments of the late 70s work of Waylon Jennings and Nelson himself, Phosphorescent has delivered a glorious hangover of an album. It’s so much more than a collection of Willie Nelson cover songs – it’s a full-blown new classic.

But this is not a musical reinvention of the band -- Phosphorescent returns with all acknowledged charms in tow; the gentle duet of "It's Not Supposed to be That Way,” the hauntingly beautiful choir of "Can I Sleep In Your Arms," and the spacious, synth-heavy "Permanently Lonely” all work to pull this album together as a cohesive statement.

As the liner notes of Nelson's To Lefty From Willie simply state: "This album is an unabashed musical love letter. From one towering talent to another.” We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

PHOSPHORESCENT invited personally by WILLIE NELSON to perform on his SIRIUS XM Radio channel "Willie's Place"

**********
Phosphorescent invited personally by Willie Nelson to perform on his SIRIUS XM Radio channel "Willie's Place" as part of Willie Nelson's 76th birthday celebration.

Earlier this year Phosphorescent released his new album To Willie, a tribute to the music of Willie Nelson. Styled after Willie's own 1975 album To Lefty, From Willie (a tribute to Lefty Frizzell), To Willie has received glowing praise from sources as far and wide as Country Weekly and Vanity Fair to MOJO and NME. Phosphorescent lovingly renders 11 tracks pulled deep from Mr. Nelson's catalog of song. All
along Matthew Houck said that his tribute wasn't just a good idea he had, but rather something he'd always known he needed to do. When preparing for the album's release, Matthew shared his thoughts about his first memory of Willie Nelson's music:

"I can remember being in the back seat of my parents' car in Alabama and hearing "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" sung by Willie Nelson. I must have been three or four years old. That huge-sounding, sad, sad song did something to me. It took something out of me. Or put
something into me I don't know which. There was a gravel driveway and a gate. My father was out of the car, opening the gate and then we were driving over the gravel. Every song I've ever sung has something to do with this moment."

And now a new voice has joined in the choir of high praise for the album - the voice belonging to Willie Nelson himself! Last week Dead Oceans received an invite from Willie Nelson's Sirius XM Radio Channel, Willie's Place (located on the dial on Sirius 64, and XM 13,) for Phosphorescent to perform as part of the channel's festivities celebrating the 76th birthday of the Red Headed Stranger.

Also last week, Matthew Houck and his entire band of
merry musicians were personally invited by Willie to come to New Brunswick, NJ to attend a Nelson performance. Upon arrival, they were invited onto his tour bus where Mr. Nelson was extremely generous and sweet, and shared some very kind words about To Willie.

You can read Matthew's own telling of the encounter on his myspace page: www.myspace.com/phosphorescent

The meeting was also blogged about on Willie's site: http://willienelson.com/news/phosph...s/phosphorescent-and-willie-new-brunswick-nj/

You can hear Phosphorescent pay an hour long birthday tribute to Willie Nelson on Willie's Place (Sirius Radio channel 64, XM 13) on Thursday April 30 at 9pm EST. Phosphorescent will perform with his full band and share stories and insights into the impact that Willie Nelson's music has had on his own career.
