what basically do i need?

how many .. what type.... cheapest ....its mostly acoustic ill be recording live and then maybe david kitt type background music so basically what do i need?

Cheap is good (secondhand?)

a good mic is really important too, if youre just recording acoustic stuff and vocals then youre better off going for a decent condenser mic, i use an akg c1000, there a little bit on the pricey side but theyre perfect for home recording

I dunno whether I'd recommend the akg c1000. It's a cheap version of the condensers that are used in 'proper' studios. For your first mic you might be better off an Shure SM57 - might not sound as shiny on acoustic guitar as the other but it is a good all-purpose mic that is used in proper studios and you'll want to keep it forever, whereas the c1000 you'll probably be thinking of replacing after a while in favour of a better condenser
I could be wrong though ...

Apart from mics, you can get really cheap cassette 4-tracks on http://www.thomann.de ... a digital 4-track or 8-track is better though. Best to have EQ (treble and bass and preferably also mid (swept if possible)) on every channel - I once had a 4-track that only had EQ on the inputs, which was useless. Also make sure it's midi compatible if you're gonna be doing David Kitt type stuff

home recording software

what about software? i use a br8 for home recording but i think it might give me a bit more flexability if i use a pc setup and maybe hook up my br8

what software would u recommend for samples, drums, synths without sounding too dancey?

You can use either:

_Cakewalk (the easiest)

_Cubase (most common)

_Cubase VST (as above but more powerful, requires LIVE! sound card)

_Pro Tools (you can download a free version limited to 4 tracks at www.digidesign.com) - requires a good computer

do y'all get russian Oktava mics there? For the small $ these are good condensers for getting brightness without eq--but they can be too much for like a lispy singer. Very detailed for acoustic instruments, they look like a very classy mic (like a u-87) but probably not as well made as c-1000's. Can be good for overheads on a drum kit, esp. in a dark or dead sounding room 'cos of the zing factor they have. And, the Antares Mic Modeler plug-in can really improve(but like any also crapify) your tracks, I've had great results treating vocs/acoustic inst. with it. Dunno if its available in all formats?
