somewhat technical neuroscientific take on this: stress = inflammation= impaired cognitive processes = impaired decision making = more stress, and effectively social media acts as a massive accelerator/multiplier to this process at a societal level:

not a neuroscientist - but the ones who I work with seemed to think the model had some validity (they are very interested in allostatic load & cognition).

Paging @Cornu Ammonis
I haven’t read it but from your summary nothing is jumping out at me as being outré.

Grew up mostly with only two TV channels and no video recorder.
First saw internet in September 1998 but never had email address until late 2003.
Never had a mobile phone until 2013. Made 99%+ phonecalls in my life since 2016 when I was 40.
As recently as 2018 there were many days I didn't look at the internet.
Got first smart phone in 2020 during pandemic and made about 95%+ phonecalls in my life since then.
Joined in Instagram in early 2022 but used it little until 2023. Now look at it everyday and find it very useful but still only comment on others posts.
Joined Facebook in October last year only first commented on things recently and rarely looked at it until last few weeks.
This year I joined several very busy activist WhatsApp groups and get dozens of messages on them every day - hard to keep up with.

I've always been a late comer to new tech stuff.

So thumped and a few other forums was it for me for a long time.

I started writing letters to music people in 1993 and in first few years ordered records / demos / zines off people in most countries in Europe plus, many US states and Japan, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, Malaysia, Australia etc.
Only really stopped writing letters regularly in 2018.
Money in an envelope worked great until 2010 or so. Finally I got a debit card in 2017 or 2018.

I thought the internet or later social media was cheating for a long time. Too easy, little effort required. Just made things too easy for twits.

There is a lot to be said for peace and quiet and people, including me, have given that up. I love it when I have a day when no one phones me.

Information Overload Unit LP by SPK dealt with this in 1980.
On one key track the person's attention is taken up by only two things (a documentary on chemical weapons narrated by Jeremy Paxman and a porn film with ridiculous overdubbed posh plummy voices) sounds quaint now.

Ah... it is a widely used term:

Some fools are loudmouths and other fools listen to them.
e.g. Early in 2022 looking at an anti lockdown demo in Holland, a brief scuffle with cops lasting under a minute was blown up as being a big deal by conspiracy folks. But the blatantly obvious thing about the demo was easy to see: every single person there was white - 100% of people in every piece of footage I saw.
They didn't think that was a conspiracy.

A day where no-one phones me is pretty much every day for me. Thumped in its halcyon days was amazing but I wouldn't be able for all that activity and such a er.. .. Vivacious cast of characters these days.
