Just been on the the Drag City site and it seems lots of the artists (White Magic, Six Organs of Admittance, Joanna Newsom, The Fucking Champs, Weird War) are doing big ass european tours, but skipping right past Ireland. Can any one tell me why this is so?

cos it costs a fair bit to stick a tour bus on a ferry, and a days travel for what will probably only sell a thousand copies, when they could sell almost as many with a british campaign.
for small record companies with 'specialist' acts thats the way it works.... bah. marketeers.

are you on crack? that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

the actual reason is more likely to be simply that no irish promoters have offered to get any of these acts over.

OR that they didn't offer enough loot
OR that tour schedules didn't allow time for irish show(s)
OR act were too lazy

Joanna Newsom played the Sugar club last year to a capacity crowd.
The Newsom gig was ticketmaster, perhaps DC have certain wanker promoters they always work with in Ireland.
Dave from Deserted Village e-mailed Ben Chasney (6 organs) ages ago about playing Ireland but he never replied.

!

Aren't you supposed to confirming a venue for us? Pressure too much for ya?

Go back to Russia bitch.

burn! owned! Psy-che!, etc!

irish promotors reckon bands don't like getting paid or maybe theyre happy enough with a few beers or a fiver each. its not like theyre trying to make a career out of music or anything crazy like that......anyway, you've got damien rice to moan at you every other week in some shithole of a venue and if you miss the gig turn on the radio for more of the same

When your trying with the last 6 weeks to secure a gig in Dublin of some deadly bands, and fail...well it becomes a bit disheartining(sp>?) ...lack of interest?Don`t know....- of course these bands are`nt on Drag City...so.....

Life at these Speeds are here in September - better then any Drag City band.

Gavin = total bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well White Magic, Six Organs of Admittance and Joanna Newsom are all touring together (saw em in leeds on monday:) )...it a pity alright that they pass over here or else that promoters ain't willing to take a chance on them. i totally agree with whoever said that irish promotors reckon acts are happy with a few beers and a fiver.

fuck that shit.
mebbe we just dont have our shit together over here!zed

certain people in galway, limerick and of course dublin...

that was nice and vague.
this thread's turning to bullshit.

if you could give newsom, white magic, and six organs an irish tour and make sure they got big, fat guarantees every night - fair play to ya.

promoters are more than willing to pay bands a good amount (cos it means their gig has done well). doesn't always work out like that.
few bands are dumb enough to think touring ireland is gonna make them a mint.

Everything depends on the turnout for gigs....if the people are`nt there to support the bands...it immediatly reflects financially for the bands. No punters no money....simple as that. Not to mention the money the promotor loses on either renting equipment, posters, venue fees etc....its different for the corporate promotors who have sponsers/backing coming out their ass.

You think a venue gets in 50/60 people and the promotor turns around and gives the band a 'fiver and some pints'?I find that hard to believe myself.

well that fella who used to be in can absolutely wedged a small venue in galway when the promotor from the venue who originally booked it cancelled the show to put on a radiohead covers band instead. bet he feels stupid now.

derserted village can corfirm this story if needs be...

most irish bands end up playing for a few fivers and free beer i think you will find. sometime there isnt even a fiver. or indeed the beer.

its sad that corporate promotors have the resources to fuck with the fanbase of a small indie type band by pushing up door prices and stuff.... they make the bands greedier and they lose their grassroots fanbase. like godspeeds association with mcd a few years ago. i know you gotta break even (whether yr a band or a promotor) but it all seems so avaristic at the price of seeing good music. like why are gigs in other countries much cheaper than here?

p.s. "promotor"=a masters of the universe character who books shows, like skeletor but with a little black book and a mobile...;)

Not quite. The Damo tour wasn't booked by Deserted Village. The Galway Date was supposed to be in Rosins. The story was that Gugai agreed to do it but was appearantly given the wrong date for Galway. He didn't actually cancel because he'd prefer to have a shitty covers band than Damo Suzuki. Your post would imply that he's a moron and he went back on his word.
By the time the date mix-up became appearent, all the other large/decent sound venues were booked up. We were pissed of because we had to turn people away from Richardsons as it was too packed. Incidentally Damo and Ze'v were the only people who got paid that night.

Bullshit. I'm sure there are lazy promoters out there but the main reasons bands don't get paid well is that very few people go to independent gigs and promoters have to hire venues. Unless you think that Low or their ilk get a few cans and a 5er when they pack the village @ 26 euro a ticket. When we tour Ireland with bands we bring over, they get 100% of door money and even sometimes that's not enough. All we can do is put up posters, send blurbs and cds to radio stations, do mailouts and put notices up on messageboards. The only bands that get any publicity beyond that pay a couple of grand to PR companies or are on bigish labels.
Most people aren't arsed checking out music that isn't handed to them on a plate.

I wonder who you mean? We always lose money when we play in Galway except for the Enso gigs when we got our transport costs paid (Cheers!)
The AMC in Limerick suffer from the same problems outlined in the previous paragraph but there have been times when they paid us and we honestly wondered where the money was coming from. Dublin is full of DIY promoters who work hard and lose money while others whine on message boards or sit on their couches when they could be hearing killer music at insanely low prices.
