He's either a shameless self promoter or just totally deluded. Probably both.

Fanning said that "some critics would say that the songs just sound like all other recent U2 songs - there's nothing new there". Or words to that effect.

He then played one of the new tracks and upon completion, Bono says "Tell me that doesn't sound completely new. You can't can you?". Or words to that effect.

It sounded exactly like every other song on the album and on recent albums...
