Hi Everyone,

Please join us in raising a (plastic) glass to the 8th Dublin Electronic Arts Festival in Filmbase, Temple Bar, this coming Thursday 22nd at 6.30pm, with Beautiful Unit performing live from the back of his van on Curved Street at 7pm in association with The Models ‘New Spaces for Music’.

DEAF 2009 is almost upon us and this Thurs 22nd Oct sees our 8th festival begin its 10 day schedule. To mark proceedings we're having a launch in Filmbase at 6.30pm to introduce the 4 installations being housed there for festival. These include work from Donal Dineen, The Projector Collective, Chequerboard & the Fugitive Video Project. Then at 7pm we’ve planned a very unusual free live performance on the street by one of Dublin’s longstanding producers Beautiful Unit, which should nicely lead us onto our main opening night event with Austria's Soap & Skin <http://www.myspace.com/soapandskin> across the road in the Button Factory. The event is presented by u:mack and tickets are only €15 – read Jim Carroll’s interview in last Fridays Ticket/Irish Times http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/theticket/2009/1016/1224256709340.html.

Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for a good talking to then head over to Sweettalk in the Sugar Club & listen to David Rodigan talk about the music & friendships that inspired him throughout his wide career including his interviews of Bob Marley. For those eager to continue on into the early hours of the morning you can catch the sound clash legend Rodigan in live action or head to Kennedys for Connecticut’s favourite house dj JUS-ED. Hopefully this will inspire an enjoyable opening night at DEAF for you & your friends, but steady on...there is 9 more to go! ... all info can be found at OUR WEBSITE <http://deafireland.com/2009/>

DEAF Opening night // u:mack presents: Soap & Skin plus Special Guest Alexander Tucker (ATP Recordings)
Button Factory
Doors 7.30 (Early show)
Tickets €15 From Road, Sound Cellar, Spindizzy, City Discs & online at www.ticket.ie <http://www.ticket.ie/>

For this year’s opening night DEAF have the honour of presenting the debut Irish performance of the wonderful Soap & Skin, aka eighteen year old Anja Plaschg. Having grown up on a pork farm in the small village of Gnas in rural Austria, Anja’s spellbinding live performances have been stunning audiences and filling concert halls across Europe. She performs alone, with a grand piano and electronics, her breathtaking vocal’s displaying a depth of talent rarely seen in such a young artist. While many have likened her to both Bjork and Nico, perhaps Cat Power and Antony and the Johnsons are more suitable comparisons, as like theirs, Anja’s melancholic compositions are truly the music of the outsider.
