The mainstream media often does not focus on the economic and social impacts of Peak Oil and Climate Change. For this reason many people still feel that these issues are not directly relevant to their everyday lives. Street Smart Sustainability is a 4 part series, which seeks to increase the understanding of the issues around sustainability so that people can make informed decisions on what they do in their daily lives.

In each episode we go out on the streets of Dublin to get Vox-Pops on what people think about the issue of the week. These Vox-Pops then form the basis of a lively in-studio discussion led by presenter, Dylan Townsend.

MAIN

In what is sadly the last of our programmes exploring masculinities organised with MAIN for this season, Finian Murray, of the men's health project takes the audience through the annual Men's Health Week. Picking up on themes from the UK, it looks at men accessing services. All the research shows that the male half of the population are quite weak at getting tested or treatment when it comes to medical treatment. This year the health week has developed a poster encouraging people to not "wait until it's too late." The poster has been distributed to health centres GAA clubs and areas where men gather across the country. David Culver, the shows resident psychologist joins the diverse panel again to put the issues discussed into the wider context of mental health.

The Making of Dublin Diaries

Over here in DCTV we're not just another TV operation. We have a unique mission.

So, when we sit down to think about the sort of programmes we want to make, we always factor in how we can empower communities and build participation in the making of media.

We like exposing the process behind how we make something and involving new layers.

As part of this mission, we came up with a show called Dublin Diaries.

Since November 2008, we've been broadcasting a show that put the people of Dublin back in touch with their own forgotten histories.

It was a people's history and consisted of a 3 minute programme, one for each day of the year.

It was a calendar packed with nuggets of forgotten histories.

Of names and events no longer whispered.

Lost in the past but resurrected again to populate each day of our diary, our Dublin Diaries.

Our researchers went digging for historical nuggets from several archives.

We furrowed away in the digital archive of the Irish Times.

Got lost for weeks in the specialized collections of The National Archive.

Poured over the registrar of imprisonment at Kilmainham Jail and the death records at Glasnevin Cemetery.

Then down in the dungeons of DCTV, our team of skilled video technicians worked night and day.

But most of all, we needed the help of Dublin communities to narrate the show and pull it across the final line.

The Powerdown Show

The Challenge Ahead

Climate change and peak oil are the issues of our time affecting all of us. But climate change and peak oil are merely consequences of a broader problem – the problem of un-sustainability. In this programme we examine climate change and peak oil from both a local and global perspective and introduce the ideas which will be examined in the following nine programmes. Ultimately the show will help individuals and communities to understand how they can effectively respond.

This programme includes interviews with George Monbiot author and journalist, Richard Douthwaite of FEASTA, Rob Hopkins of Transition Towns and Prof. John Sweeny of NUI Maynooth.
