Brooklyn-based Chairlift is poised to release their debut album Does You Inspire You in the UK through the forward-thinking independent NY label Kanine Records (home to Grizzly Bear, Holy Hail and many others) on October 27th, 2008.
Formed in Boulder, Colorado in early 2006, Caroline Polachek (lead vocals), Aaron Pfenning (guitar) and Patrick Wimberly (drums) were brought together over a shared fascination with 1980's faux-gothic architecture, oak-cabinet aquariums, vacant dance floors, fake trees, crystal chandeliers and dark velveteen booths. Thus inspired, the three form Chairlift, a band making a new breed of bewitching, atmospheric pop music.
Relocating to Brooklyn that summer, the trio continued on to develop a hypnotic yet tongue-in-cheek style, playing shows around Brooklyn and the Lower East Side with a thriving society of experimental pop magicians including MGMT and Yeasayer.
Their first official UK release, the “Evident Utensil” single, an ode to pencils, was launched on limited edition 7” vinyl with a remix by MGMT. It was met with great reviews in British press with the NME calling it “a charming pop oddity”. Comparisons were made to The Knife, Art of Noise, Of Montreal and Yaz, but it is a French website (LesInrocks.com) however, that gets it best citing that Chairlift is “just as at home in a David Lynch film as in the aisles of a supermarket.”
Chairlift has spent much of 2008 touring with the likes of MGMT, YACHT and Mixel Pixel whenever possible. They will be embarking on a US tour with Yeasayer in October and will be crossing the pond for their first UK shows in November. Watch this space for more information on UK tour dates and future releases. There is a lot of ground to cover from Colorado to Brooklyn and beyond.
Chairlift’s debut album, Does You Inspire You, is set for release on October 27th through Kanine Records.
TALULAH DOES THE HULA
Borne of a mutual love of the tropics, pop music, harmonies, bouffants, sex, sunshine, outdoor drinking and Phil Spector, Talulah does the Hula has come together as a sprightly quintet whose goal it is to get your foot tapping and bootie wiggling.
