so much misplaced anger here..jesus maybe I should see someone.

There's nothing wrong with being a bit of a sellout, once you're fuckin good. Its the shitness of Hansard and his oirish mates I hate. THEIR MUSIC SUCKS COCK. I'm all on for making a fat pile of cash, owning the worlds filthiest stash of porn and having servants pick up monkey nut shells after me all day. I don't wanna live in this shithole forever. Whats wrong with that? Once the music is good.

I hate Ireland.......mostly!bog

i mean a broader young-audience - there are more people listenin to the frames type stuff than to the stuff we would like to see/hear. and i wouldn't consider meself at 26 especially young. i wasn't calling these bands sell-outs - i was saying that this sort of music is more attractive to prospective advertisers for this tv show.

Barry McCormack (he used to be in Jubilee, right? I'm not sure if I have the right guy in mind) is a brilliant songwriter and an extremely charismatic performer.

Whatever about Paddy Casey who is neither. And has his head up his own ringpiece.

I'm not sure why you're all gettin gso hot and bothered about this, it seems the same as the over the top reactions to the 'Scene that celebrates itself' thing. A lot of the band folk that post here are involved in making some fantastic music that pisses on a lot of the stuff on this show, but the simple fact is that rte are going to cater to the masses and not the minority of musicians that most of you are a part of. Personally there's very few people from that list that i'm a big fan of, but most of these people are in the wider consciousness and people would be more aware of them. Of course the selection of groups isn't particularly innovative but it's pretty much guaranteed that the viewing figures for the Damien Rice show will be a lot higher than for a show with the jimmy cake or the rednecks or whoever. And ultimately it's the bottom line that matters to rte, as bland as many of the acts lined up for the series are they're the ones that people want to see.
I just don't think that you should get so upset about it, i'm assuming none of you are genuinely shocked at how the lineup has turned out but sadly musical talent and quality don't really enter the equation for stuff like this.

it would be grand if they were "catering to the masses"; i don't get pissed off at "you're a star" and "top 30 hits" and the like.

it's the fact that despite what you call "catering to the masses", r.t.e. are actually attempting to dress this up as young and new and innovative and all the rest of it. bollocks to that.

secondly, r.t.e. are not necessarily seeking a lowest common denominator; the "masses" they're seeking are a specific audience, which they can then sell to advertisers. this programme is for people who have obviously been focus-group researched as being somewhat bored with david gray but still essentially looking for the same thing. they obviously buy a lot of shampoo or cars or something.

in fact, what'll be most interesting about this programme will be the ads that get shown before, during and after it. that'll tell you a lot more about the motivations of the people involved than the choice of music.

I think the point is that a lot of these freaks get plenty of publicity as it is. And most of them probably have professional management and/or PR companies working to keep their sorry arses above water (for fear the shite might run out of their holes and into the drinking water).

This probably comes down to a debate about the remit of a public broadcasting company. The question is, (i) should RTE simply follow trends established elsewhere and pander to media/market forces, or (ii) should RTE programming obey the Reithian injunction to "educate, inform and entertain" - in that order.

(I think it's clear where I stand.)
