How do you do it? Alphabetically? Do you put the Amps with the Breeders? Kept a Ruins album with Autechre for years, just because the covers looked like they belonged together.
Have done regionally then alphabetically in the past but have gone pretty much alphabetical this time, except I'm left over with a shite load of compilations with now where to go.
Any ideas on getting rid of CDs completely, but keeping all the physical artwork at hand? I hate jewel cases. They're like water bottles or chewing gum on the pavement..
Maybe CaseLogic.

Re: Cataloging your music

Case logic is the tool of the devil, or of the small devil that wants you to lose 20% of you c.ds every time you move gaf. "Its okay that album is definitely in the case no need to worry" But it's not, and it's not anywhere in the flat you just moved out of cos you checked fifteen fucking times to make sure you didn't leave anything except that horde of dutch ass-porn that you deliberately left as a "gift" for the new tennants. So where did it go? Well CaseLogic? Where the FUCK DID HALF MY FUCKING POSSESSIONS GO YOU USELESS FUCKING HEAP OF SHIT STORAGE DEVICE MOTHERFUCKER? I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF GIVING MY C.DS TO A JUNKIE OUTSIDE A FUCKING CASH CONVERTORS TO HOLD FOR A FEW MINUTES THAN YOU, YOU FUCKING HALF ARSED EXCUSE FOR A SPACE SAVER. AND LOGIC? WHERES THE FUCKING LOGIC? PUT YOUR STUFF IN ME AND IT DISSAPPPEARS? WHY DONT YOU MAKE TUMOR HOLDERS OR FUCKING MAN UNITED JERSEYS YOU BUNCH OF INANIMATE BASTARDS.

ahem. Sorry about that. Catalog wise I just lash what's left of my c.ds on a shelf willy-nilly that way when you go to look for something specific you get acosted by other equally tastey treats while looking for that initial desire. Like going to look for your girlfriend in a changing room.

Re: Cataloging your music

cds are arranged alphabetically, for the most part. stuff that doesnt fit into my cd racks thrown on top, with anything that makes sense to go together together... eg constellation stuff.
vinyl - i have different shelves for different genres, usually organised by label, artist or sub genre within that. there is a definite order of sorts there, otherwise id be searching for ages to try and find stuff.
reorganising my tunes is one of my favourite things to do without a doubt, i always feel great after it. this is tragic like...
could never get rid of my cds (or their cases!).. dont do it!!

i'm intrigued that this is in lifestyle rather than general music discussion

Alphabetically. You only have to do it once then just keep adding to it. There are some exceptions though, I have Lou's solo stuff with Sebadoh under S. Likewise I have all the King's X members' solo albums in K. Pain when you get a new album and everything has to move, especially when it's early in the alaphabet. But I can always find stuff and know when something is missing.

By year. It was alphabetical for a while but then my racks began to fill up and any new purchase meant I had to move a fuckload of albums if it was early in the alphabet.

Also if a band/person I really like has a sizeable catalogue I'll stick all their stuff together on a single shelf.

Alphabetical, for records anyway. But not strict within each letter, although I may still do that. All the records by one band are kept together, makes it easier to find stuff. Similar genre's seem to have gravitated toward each other too.
Compilations are kept together at the end and ,split records too. I also have a "trade/rubbish" section.
I'm once again almost full,so i may need to get rid of some of the rubbish.
Cd's are a mess, but I never really listen to them, and I've been selling some recently.

I use this for dvd's.

Haven't bothered doing it with my cd's yet.
You hold the barcode up to your webcam & it scans it in for you.
Automatically lists them in alphabetically order, then you can print off the list, throw out the cases & store your discs in pouches.
