so last week the fan at the back stopped spinning, the volume gradually decreased and the back started to smell of burning.

question is, does this generally happen with amps and is it fixable yourself? or any ideas on the cost of this being fixed by the shop? it's an ashdown MAG 300 bought in music maker.

:(

If it's the transformer and you can solder it's easy enough to switch in a new one.

get someone qualified to check it.

likely scenario.
Fan stopped because of component failure
temperature rose in the amp and the power stage transistors overheated and cooked.

The fact that is went quiet indicates that the unit ran on half of the transistors for a while before dying.

There are dangerous levels inside then thing so don't mess with it unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

for a qualified guy it should take about half an hour to diagnose and another half an hour to repair adduming that they have replacement components.
