Just going through what TDs and the Taoiseach earn.
Comparing it to Westminster:
A TD is represents 27,000 people and earn about €96K (GBP£86K).
An MP in Westminster represents 92,000 people and earn about GBP£65K (€71K).
Per person this works out as follows:
In the UK - 77c
In Ireland - €3.55
So it could be suggested that TDs in Dáil Eireann are earning 4 times the amount that their Westminister counterparts are earning.
The Dáil should be reduced in size and TDs should be paid less. It's actually fair to suggest that the number of TDs should be halved from 166 to 83.
That way a TD would represent about 54,000 people.
Sure it's just a drop in the ocean but it's absolutely ridiculous that they're expecting regular civil servants to take pay cuts when they're just creaming money off the system.
Even if it is just a symbolic gesture, the salary of TDs should be cut by half.
just read here: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1209/breaking4.htm that retired public servants get up to 70% of their salaries and this will remain so after the budget. isn't the going rate in the private sector 50% or something?
