On the topic of bikes 2 questions

1. What's the etiquette in relation to stealing/taking parts from ghosts of bikes around the city centre?

2. Anyone have any good tips on breaking bike locks for said purpose?

I know you can just twist the frame to snap a U lock, any other tricks to other locks?

1. Isn't there a bike building/maintanence workshop coming up soon? Anyone have any info? I think they have permission from the garda to take abandoned bikes from around the city.

2. You can open a u lock with a ball point pen if you want. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=67493

It's called Urban Bicycle exchange (UBE),
it's going on for 5 weeks in the project and kicking off tonight!
They did get permission to rescue abandoned bikes around the
city.

I'll try but i'm not promising anything.

that tis the one....but it'll be no good if its from a mountain bike cuz they're too thick it'll have to be a rader one...ill swap ya some spare parts of mine if ya want? i got a whole garage full of ripped up bikes that i get parts off, i just have the one racer though.

Weeler, let someone else do the stealing and buy next to nothing at Garda auctions, most big stations have them once a year and they sell of loads of unclaimed, reclaimed stuff at low low prices

Them auctions can be really good alright but there's always eijits who pay way too much for some bikes.

Last year the guys in my house got a cannondale for 250, a kona for 200 and a specialised for 150. Only the specialised needed much work. If your going make sure you get down the day before for a good look around the bikes.

Chead U-Locks. As the guards said once, yer wasting yer time sawing through that, sure just hit it a belt of a hammer. You can saw through the centre ogf the straight bar but it takes ages. Hammer the end of the bar where the locking mechanism is. Quality D-Locks are the hardest to get off. Cable locks - usually just need a big cable cutters. Those ones that have a clear plastic covering and a wound coil inside are a joke, the plastic magnifies the coil inside, which is actually tiny. Ones with a 'housing' around the cable, i.e. those ones that look like a load of small interlinked cylinders covered in plastic - Often you can just cut the plastic and the cylinders will fall apart revealing a small cable inside. Otherwise crush it with a vice grips and then cut the inner cable. THIS INFORMATION IS TO BE USED FOR THE FORCES OF GOOD ONLY.
As far as the scavenging of parts, anything left on the mean streets for a month is fair game in my humble opinion. Try not to get too hasty...'Hmm that Colnago's been parked overnight in the city centre. he obviously doesn't care enough about a quality bike like that, I think I should take his deraillerurs coz I deserve them more....' If the cops say anything just tell them it's your bike and you've lost the keys. Probably tell you to move on anyway.

Hope the truck scare doesn't scare you off the streets.

you need to get two locks if you ask me. for both wheels and frame. ive got a specialized heavy lock and oxford long cable lock. id defo recommend the Specialized lock its about €45 from Cycleways. the Oxford long cable one is good aswell as if you're out with your mates who dont have a lock itll stretch over theirs too

i just use quick release wheels and lock em to my frame wit a u lock....but i might use my lock like once a month cuz ya dont need it in kilcoole, just in bray and the odd time for greystones.....i bet you's are thrilled with that information though huh?

If you use two locks make sure they are different. Different style of key and probably a U lock and a cable. If you use two of the same the thief beats one then knows exactly what to do on the other.

pete should make a bikes forum
