Band or solo. Who's better on their todd? (2 Viewers)

Morrissey solo is better than the Smiths.
First Tin Machine album is great stuff, second one is pretty rubbish.

also, mightn't mean much to most readers but
King's X went through a rough patch for a few years, funnily enough this was a period where all three members were bringing out solo albums, all of which were very good.

first Tin Machine LP is good - way better than quite a few of Bowie's later efforts.

'Time will Crawl' is a great song.

Wasn't one of the lads in Rufus Wainwrights' band (who were here a couple of weeks ago) in Tin Machine? The Irish lad? Or am I totally wrong about that I wonder.

Interesting thread.

Bjork is probably better than the Sugar Cubes, but I never got the Sugar Cubes, so maybe not.

Edit: I'm completely wrong about that Tin Machine thing. Yer man (Gerry Leonard) did tour with Bowie, but wasn't in Tin Machine.

I never knew...

edit: I saw a Darren Hayman solo record second hand the other day and almost bought it. Should I?

which one was it?

I've heard Table For One a couple of times and it's quite good. Don't know The Secondary Modern LP.

I was a massive Hefner fan back in the day. Reviewed more records by them in AB than any other band.
The next project, The French, made a decent album too.

peter hammill brought out superb albums on his own and with van der graaf generator in the 70s and then continued making deadly albums for a while after they split up. these days he's probably better when he's in the band although the last couple of solo studio albums were pretty good too

robert wyatt is better than soft machine obviously

Luna were a better band than Galaxie 500, but Dean & Britta are not a patch on Luna.
Galaxie 500 were a better band than Damon & Naomi.
Sean Edan's After Luna, I've yet to hear (the name puts me riiiight off).

Me too. It was the secondary modern one. I got one single by the french, the one with porn shoes on it, but that's as far as I went. I started losing interest around the time of the synthy hefner album, but looking back I'd say I'd like it now. The songs I remember play very well in my head.

Scott Walker.

Would agree with the Bjork and Cave suggestions here. Most of the rest are dubious in my opinion.

Tin Machine? I'm prepared to believe that the first album is better than some of the Bowie solo stuff at the time but that's mostly because most of the Bowie solo stuff at the time was awful.

And whoever mentioned Damien Rice is spot on. His solo stuff may be terrible but it's not as terrible as Juniper, surely?!

Oh yeah and when Neil Young was suggested I presume what was meant was that he was better when he went solo than as part of Buffalo Springfield. Which is true.

Well Luna's not exactly a solo project of Dean Wareham but nonetheless, despite hair-splitting, I don't think they released one album that eclipses any of Galaxie 500's.
Is Spiritualized a solo project? If so J Spacefella has gone upwards and onwards from his Spacemen 3 days.

Scott Walker-v-The Walker Brothers.

Denis De Young- Styx

Lisa - Steps

Louise - Eternal

The one from S Club Seven

Abs' stuff is waaayyy better than 5ives'.

Wayne Kramer's stuff isn't better than the MC5's.

Mark Kozelek's solo stuff is pretty great but i'd have to go with the Painters.

Does King Diamond count as a solo project?

Some of the wu tang solo stuff (liquid swords, fishscale, 36 chambers the dirty versions) are damn near a match for their best material as a group, i reckon.

I much prefer Tiny Tim's solo stuff to rowan and martin's laugh in...

Yeah, similarly Dollar were amazing once they ditched those Guys And Dolls losers

great pop album, I listen to it most weeks.

gotta disagree on Morrissey. Some great solo stuff to be sure, but overall the Smiths beats his (quite patchy) solo stuff for quality and consistency.
Agree with most other posters on their choices....not the Tin Machine one though!

Lou Barlow? some Sebadoh stuff is top notch. wasn't a big fan of Dinosaur J.
Robert Wyatt
er, thats it.

Availing of the multiquote option to annoy you all

all of Paul Weller's solo albums have been consistently good.

The first two Jam LPs were not.

No and no

I prefer Paul Simon's solo stuff to his simon and garfunkel stuff.

God yeah

Neil Young better solo? whaaaaat are you smoking?
all his best stuff was made with Crazy Horse and the Stray Gators!
seconded

Rory Gallagher to Taste.
Bits of both shurley

Morrissey solo is better than the Smiths.

whaaaat?

Scott Walker.
Yep, but best LP is Walker Brothers (Nite Flights) albeit recording individual songs.

Is Spiritualized a solo project? If so J Spacefella has gone upwards and onwards from his Spacemen 3 days.
Higher up, and then WAY lower down

Wayne Kramer's stuff isn't better than the MC5's.
To state the bleedin obvious

I'd agree with Paul Simon and Scott Walker. Would very much disagree with Paul Weller, Morrissey, Nick Cave and Jason Pierce.

I really like the first Cybotron album, but prefer Juan Atkins' later Model 500 and Infiniti solo projects.

Although he's certainly produced some real crap as a solo artist, I think, on the whole, I actually prefer Julian Cope's stuff to that of The Teardrop Explodes.

Brian Eno over Roxy Music? Hmmm...maybe. Same with John Foxx over Ultravox.

David Grubbs has had some excellent solo albums, but better than anything he did with Squirrel Bait, Bastro, Bitch Magnet or Gastr del Sol? Probably not.
