think i have to second that emotion
the mad for sadness version shits on the album version methinks

Had the pleasure of touring with them when they were promoting 'The red thread' - i tried never to miss a show - the record isn't a patch on what they were doing on stage so I'm feeling like I should trawl for a bootleg from that time.

I've never consciously listened to Arab Strap. Would this box be a good place to start?

I think mad for sadness is a good spring board into "the strap".
A Live album with tracks culled from the first two albums and ep etc. A bunch of friends of mine all lived in a flat together years ago and the music partisans would argue and bicker over songs all the time, this was the only album all four of them loved.
Philophobia is also a good starting point me things.
Some of my favourites not mention yet.

same here on the mad for sadness tip, blew my mind when I heard it

on the 'which gig would you go to if you could go back in time' question
it woudl be this
or recording of the band's "rock og ages' album

or maybe first time I saw ventian snares, cos I completely missed the whole thing after misjudging the WHiskey:Ronan ratio
