im looking into staying a spell in new zealand - it says in the work visa eligibility details that you must "be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old". Do reckon if your 30 when you apply/arrive its ok? or would you have to be 29? I know i could email them and ask but i bet someone here knows...

ive heard once you arrive home before your 31st birthday you are grand

but living in Bondi Junction was too much like an Irish colony...I saw county jerseys I never knew existed...

quote]

ahm beanstalk?...were you me for a while?

christ i hate gaa jerseys here in ireland. theyre 100 times worse that far from home.

the fuckin cock and bull eh. lived just up the road from the place and thankfully only had the misfortune of being in there 2 or 3 times in 8 months.

heard that fruitpicking pays a pittance and its not worth it. just to keep in mind!!

yeah it doesn't pay great. But that's not really the point.
If your going to Oz to find a career etc then friutpicking isn't great. But if your going to travel and meet people and all that malarky its supposed to be rad.
Some people base trips around fruitpicking - 2 weeks here working partying - then travel to the next place and do the same - so on.
Theyr gaggin' for people to help out with harvesting so you can usually march up and get a job starting there and then.

Melbourne is so much nicer than Sydney...its like Galway, to Sydney's Dublin...

That is one of the most offensive things I've ever read. Melbourne is amazing but likening it to a shithole like Galway, forshame!

I didn't do the whole travelling to SE Asia, but New Zealand is amazing. Get yourself a ticket, you won't regret it. You know what we did when we went and it was one of the best times of my life...and I didn't want to go either what with the stereotypes.

I think I was every Paddy on the Oz visa for a while there...so many people get stuck in Bondi for the full 12 months...not that they don't have a ball or anything...tis just a long way to go to shag people from Carlow.

Ah, the "Sydney Trap".

i'm going to Oz on Monday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and im SO excited. i'm going to see my dad and my gran, haven't seen them since last year.

8 days. no work.just sydney mania.

yay!

:D

So I'm 2 steps closer to doing this, 2 big steps.
I'm now single and I officially resigned today.

Now just to finalise itinerary and go. Aiming for 2 months from now.
Again cos I'm goin on my own I'm looking for help without having to ring lots of automated answering machines and authorities.

At the moment I'm pretty settled on Round World ticket with 7 stops, South Africa, Asia, Australia (x2), New Zealand (x2), South America and home. 1 year.

Whats the story with injections? And who did you people go with? Trailfinders or USIT or someone else? im probably gonna wanna change my chosen dates of arrival/ departure quite a bit, depending on who i meet.

Thanks,
Niall

I worked in Melbourne University for a year, and I loved every minute of it. I did very little socialising with Irish, because they invariably all seemed to live in the St Kilda area while I lived in the north inner city. The odd few times I was in Irish bars, while I had craic, I found it vaguely depressing how the Irish had created a claustrophobic 'home from home'. however it seemed to be what they went to oz for, along with the weather of course..

Sample conversation:

Jaysis I met a mad fecker from Monaghan lash nigh...

Feck off, sure we met a bunch of maaaad cunts from monaghan singing Paddy Reilly on the bus yesterday..

Okay, I don't know about you, but I don't travel 12,000 miles to meet 'a mad fecker from Monaghan'.

Its an incestuous scene not unlike county colours night in Quinns or some other such provincial drinking emporium.

Also met a friend of a friend who used to recite the our father as gaeilge in the proximity of Aussie women 'cos he thought they found the irish language devilishly attractive, and the our father was all he knew. This is sad on so many levels I could write a thesis about it!

Irish people do tend to form clicks out there, and do tend to wear their counties GAA jersey, and do tend to live in over-populated flats, but ultimately it is what you make of it, and I don't personally know anyone, out of literally dozens that have gone that have had a more negative than positive experience.

Go! And make sure to check out Melbourne!!! That city really really rocks..

im still procrastinating about seeing the world but i got me NZ visa there last week so thats grand, think i'll go after christmas and hopefully i might save a few few quid in the mean time.

i was thinking about where i'd like to go on the way and thought it'd be cool to go oman and iran for a start but january seems like a bad time to go to iran - sub zero temperatures and snow.... south america is the other option which seems more viable weatherwise but my main concern is that since i'd be travelling alone i can see myself sitting alone in a tent on a mountainside or beach somewhere with only my own thoughts for company and this could be troublesome. anyone have any experience with wilderness-related existential crises?

im goin on my own too, South America included, and the same thing has been worrying me. Im pretty ok with my own thoughts but just incase, might bring a football and draw a smiley face on it like Tom
