can someone PLEASE tell me how to umlaut and scharf s on computers?

on a Mac: function (the key to the left of the option key, it usually says 'alt' and has a little symbol underneath) + 8, then release both. You should see a an underlined umlaut symbol on its own. Then hit the letter key you want the umlaut for.
On PCs, you gotta learn the alt+number combination for each one.
