leigh if you want i could upload you the fall's greatest hits
"50,000 fall fans cant be wrong"

they're so prolific and so damn good you wont believe it.
on second thoughts just download it, ive just realised the logistics of uploading 2 cds online and im not arsed.
still, its probably the best starting point for a band with over 50 albums or as pavlos said get psykic dance hall which is another good introduction to their earlier years.

that sounds good,
i'll have a wander in tower at the weekend to see if they have it.

Cab it up. A great (and cheap) introduction is that Psycik dancehall compilation. V. affordable...

For just another £5 you can get The Complete Peel Sessions

24 Peel Sessions over 6 CDs.

The best box set ever. And £17.99 is a great price. Cost me a lot more when it came out first. Think it's around €50 - €60 in the shops here.

A fantastic introduction to the band as you can progress the entire evolution through the years 1978 - 2004.

I suppose...
The Clash / Throbbing Gristle (not quite punk, but very relevant) / Buzzcocks (early incarnation with Howard Devoto) / Sex Pistols / Subway Sect.,
...can't think of any others off the top of my head...
