    Attenuators

In a gigging or rehearsal situation I'd say definitely. Everything from low end, gain, punchyness, tonal warmth, note definition etc. improves after five on the master volume. Pre amp @ 10, Master @ seven on my JCM800, and THD @ -8dB is sound heaven for me at gigs!! :) It is better for bedroom...

    Attenuators

Been using the THD Hotplate for a while now and find it very good. You need to aware of the exact purpose of an attenuator before buying one otherwise you'll be disappointed. They are not for getting fully cranked 100W tone at bedroom level. To do this you'd need well over 20dB of attentation...

    Guitar tuner problem

Almost all pedals use stereo jacks but you need to use mono cable with them. The reason is because with a mono cable in a stereo jack the sleeve and ring will be shorted. This is used as a kind of battery switch in guitar pedals so that the battery isn't being drained when you're not plugged in...

    Replacing Speakers

Apart from their dubious SPL claims I've heard nothing but good things about the RedCoat range and this speaker should suit your amp just fine. AFAIK they recommend that you use all 8 mounting screws because of the weight of the magnet, you're existing baffle board may only have four but it's no...

does anyone know anything about noise gate/noise reduction pedals?

The lead setting on the overdrive channel of the MGs is noisy, but I use it at fairly high volume at rehearsal with single coils at 10 and don't have any problems controlling noise/feedback. It sounds to me more like you've problems with you guitar or amp. Does your guitar do this with other...

Harley Benton GA5H vs Blackheart BH5H

Been really happy with my GA5 so far. Made a few tweaks on it and even use it for gigging now with a 2 X 12. They're really great value for money. There's a few sound samples on my uTube page (link below) if you wanna have a listen. I've heard great things about the Blackstar also but have no...

    Me tubes have turned blue

Usually a light blue glow is caused by gas in the vacuum. That's ok. :) As far as the reduce volume is concerned I would replace the power valves to see if it solves the problem. Arcing power valves can often show a blue glow too. Ideally you'd want to re bias them as well. If this doesn't...

    expression pedal

Just re wire a Bespeco volume pedal (100k, ohm that is!!)for one stereo output (with no connection to chassis) and jobs done, cheap and chearful. :) The one thing that might change is the range, or required ohm value, of the pot. They're usually 100k but can be different. The value (if...

    Fancy practice amps

The Harley Benton GA5 is great value for money (> €100 from Thomann) and with a little tweaking hear and there can sound great. I've some sound clips of mine on my uTube page (link in sig). There's samples of clean, through AC/DC right up to metal straight from the amp (now). You could always...

    epiphone valve junior

There is an eight ohm tap ready to be used on the stock transformer and it's easy to install a rotary switch to switch between 4/8ohm. :) You'd need to buy a Hammond OT upgrade to get a 16ohm output. That's a mod you could easily f**k up!! :p

Peavey 30 Classic Tweed- valves question

If it is a power valve then you'll a set of 4 x EL84s. They are fairly common valves so any decent store should be stocking them. You'd probably get a better selection and pricing on-line though. I prefer JJ/Tesla EL84s if you're looking for recommendations. If it's the peamp valve then you'll...

    JCM 800 Mods

They're more like an EL34 than a 6L6, but have more low end as opposed the the mid ranch "punch" of an EL34 so it lends itself more to metal sounds, IMO. EL34/6L6 is more the whole brittish/american sound thing, Marshall vs Fender etc. KT77s seem to get a bad rap for high failure rates. KT77s...

    JCM 800 Mods

Yeah, I've done a bunch of gain and tone mods as well as fitting the amp out for KT77 output valves. The Hotplate is just to take the volume down a bit for recording as the digital camera clips/compresses fairly hard even a lowish volumes.

    JCM 800 Mods

The purpose of the mods was for warmer, thicker, meatier sounds with more gain at bedroom volumes. In this vid the MV is set to 4 with the Hot Plate @ -16dB and dialed down to half way. The vid description gives details of work so far. I'd be interested if your thoughts, suggestions and/or...
