So what was the deal with that? Did you get anaphylaxis or something? Is a redback a Black Widow? Because them girls is eeeeeevil looking. I'd rather not get bitten by them.
They also have really stick web, so you're there "oh shit, that's a black widow, I'll just gently prod around here" and the next thing you've got their web stuck to you and you're inadvertently yanking them towards yourself, deeply regretting the poking around decision.
In fairness, I woke up, got dressed, went to work. I had a real itchy arm. Didn't look at it until after work and saw a spot with a red ring around it. I had been bitten while asleep in my own bed.
I asked a South African friend about it and she said that is definitely a bite from something poisonous. She's Saffa, she knows these things.
Then it developed into a huge blister, about the size of a €2 coin and maybe 8mm high. That burst. At that point I was working at a festival for a week. So after that week of me not taking care of the wound and sleeping in a tent and general debauchery, the scab went all green and gross. And so, antibiotics were administered.
The redback bite happened on the morning I left Australia. So I didn't notice until I was on the plane. Maybe the change in air pressure made it worse. Again, there was a massive blister, but only about the size of 20p piece, maybe 5mm high. It was right on my Achilles tendon. Very irritating, but not terrible. In Oz, a redback hasn't killed a person in a hundred years, but it can kill the very young or very old or the very infirm. But I was there with my mum and my sister in law, and they were being very maternal and worried when I showed them a pic. Their caring was not helpful.
Anyway. if you happen to be in Oz, shake your shoes and socks out every morning.
