Is there any point in doing physical copies of an album? (3 Viewers)

Putting the finishing touches to a new Stoat album, hopefully will go to the mixers by the end of the month.

Do ye think there's any point in getting CDs printed? How about vinyl?

I think releasing new CDs is redundant if it's going to be online.

If you're going to do a physical, vinyl makes way more sense

yeah. I last did a cd back in 2017/18, and even then the response was 'oh cool but I've nothing I can play this on' from many.
the cd revival is probably about 5 years off.

If I was at a gig I'd probably be more willing to take a chance on the cheaper CD version rather than pay twice the price & the rest on a record I may not really like.

I was buying CDs up until I changed my car a few months back. The new one doesn’t have a cd player on it

You’re probably best off with vinyl or tape. Tape’s cheaper and some people seem to buy them. Vinyl seems to be mental expensive

Having said all that, we haven’t done a physical release of any of our stuff. We’re recording an ep in May. Might combine that and the last one into a physical release. Maybe.

Well you more than likely have a better idea who the Stoat listenership than any of us.
I would guess data of who and where and how many people stream your music ?
Physical format could be good for promotion but a free download maybe works as well ?
The collector seeks to own possessions but attachment and clinging leads to suffering.

In my experience, this would be the case.
Rarely do I buy a CD off a band I thought was good having never seen them before, but I have done. I can't really take a punt on Vinyl.
That said:
In some cases, I've bought a t-shirt or something and been given a CD gratis, as the band has hundreds of the things laying around at home.

So, I dunno. Short expensive vinyl run with good graphic design, or else t-shirts and badges and stuff. Or both. I like the CD-R idea mentioned above. Feels (and indeed is) more personal.

Maybe I should just get cool-looking business cards with a QR code on the back that leads to a gateway-to-all-streaming-services webpage
or stoat badges/t-shirts with QR.

I'd nearly be more inclined to do T-shirts rather than cds.

I occasionally see a holy sparks octopus t-shirt in the wild. I'd say any of the cds are in landfill/down the back of couches.

If you think you have a market for physical copies then defo do it.

Mobineko start at around a tenner copy for 100. Selling at 20 direct works pretty well. Obviously getting more brings price down and profits up.

Shirts sell well in my experience too.

Maybe include a real live stoat as part of a deluxe edition?
Although it could be a legal minefield.....it would bite someone & there would be lawsuits & you'd have the animals rights do gooders all over you.
Merch made out of stoat fur is probably the best bet.
