Chequerboard – Penny Black

Dublin guitarist, producer & graphic artist, Chequerboard (aka John Lambert) marks the release of his new album Penny Black upstairs in The Sitting Room in Whelans on Sunday March 2nd.  Fusing found sounds with melodic guitar, Lambert builds lush, textured, soundscapes for his work as Chequerboard that paint an evocative world of their own.  His 2005 release Dictaphone Showreels carved out an organic electronica that quickly became a favourite of breakthrough radio dj’s Cian Ó Cíobháin and Donal Dineen, leading to live shows with Dineen throughout 2006 and the inclusion of his track Konichiwa on Ó Cíobháin’s compilation album An Taobh Tuathail Vol 1.

In 2007 Lambert was awarded the inaugural music fellowship from the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo; one of ireland’s leading centres for contemporary culture.  During his time in Sligo Lambert worked on his new offering, Penny Black, which is due for release on February 22nd through Lazybird.  His second full length album, his debut Gothica was released in 2002, Penny Black once again carves out a distinct and evocative world, one which had its seeds sown with Dictaphone Showreels and indeed includes some tracks from the stand out EP.

With the album wrapped and waiting for release Lambert took the Penny Black world to Dublin Gallery thisisnotashop in November of last year with an installation piece comprising of textured and intricate montages themed on the sound of the new album.  The pieces were assembled on top of old vinyl record jackets and featured antique collectibles, military curios, old postcard details and various quotidian debris which were then included in the album artwork.

Penny Black will be unveiled at an intimate launch show in the Sitting Room at Whelans on Sunday March 2nd accompanied by a stunning visual show, promising the ideal atmosphere to experience Chequerboards unique electronic slant.  Support comes from the brilliant French tinged pop folk chanteuse Carly Sings and tickets, priced €10 are available from WAV tickets etc etc

Chequerboard is Donal Dineen’s live guest on The Small Hours (Today FM) on Feb 27th.
