i picked up the wooden shjips lp since and it's shaping up to be one of the best of the year for me. their 7" that i got earlier in the year should really have been on my original list

whitehouse : racket (an absolutely perfect album, all
of these tracks are extremely well composed: the
interweaving rhythms on "mouth battery beast" are
amazing, and "the avalanche" reminds me of aube's
"metal de metal" and holgar czukay's "canaxis" [two of
my favourite albums ever] and achieves everything
within four minutes everything the hafler trio try to
do, but fail while taking three hours at it. "bia
mintatu" is an intense psychedelic epic. there isn't a
bad moment on this)

faust + nurse with wound : disconnected (everything i
could hope this could have been it is. faust's first
album and "so far" perfectly blended with nww's "an
awkward pause" and "merzbild schwet")

consumer electronics : nobody's ugly (one side soars,
the other side burrows. reaches peaks and troughs of
total ecstacy. "black cotton wool" is one of the most
euphoric things i have heard)

diana rogerson / a bad diana : the lights are on but
no-one's home (picks up beautifully where "belle du
jour" left off. wonderful stuff)

fovea hex : neither speak nor remain silent (the first
two EPs have been released earlier but as the whole
set is complete i include it in its entireity. fripp's
contributions to the third EP make it the weakest of
the series. the songs "huge (the joy of trouble)" and
"we sleep you bloom" are particularly sublime)

carter tutti : feral vapours of the silver ether
(soothing and immersive. less experimental than
"cabal", which i must say do prefer, but still
extremely enjoyable. "acid tongue" is a great song)

the threshold houseboys choir : form grows rampant
(the first two tracks are absolutely stunning,
"intimations of spring" being a particular highlight.
after this, the rest of the album doesn't grab me so
much. but well worth it for the amazing
afforementioned two tracks. the film is wonderful
also.)

the ceramic hobs : al al who (excellent album by the
best punk band currently active. schitzophrenic,
excellent songwriting often provoking a good belly
laugh)

thinguma*jigsaw : (awakeinwhitechapel) (charming and
sinister folk, like a paired down "first utterance"
comus conducted by philip glass)

irr. app. (ext.) : cosmic superimposition (typically
hypnotic extended drone work)

agitated radio pilot : world winds down (basically the
"folk" type of current 93 but with a singer who can
actually sing, and mercifully without endless
references to christ)

aube reworks nimh : volume 1 (all of the aube reworks
series are wonderfully mesmerzing and relaxing, this
is no exception)

frida abtan : subtle movements (interesting
musique-concrete pieces)

coh : strings (lovely synth pieces, lots of
bubbling arpeggiation)

alvin lucier : ever present (collection of rather
academic experimental works, the "piper" track is a
wonderful drone piece. much of the rest leaves me
rather cold, but is intellectually interesting)

the best of ethiopiques (nice compilation of
highlights from the amazing series of ethiopian music
of various styles)

top reissues of the year:

nurse with wound : insect and individual silenced
(side B is pretty boring, but side A of this -
"alvin's funeral" - is really wonderful. amazing
presentation on this reissue, which i am exteremly
glad to see at last)

" " " " : homotopy to marie (this masterpiece has been
out of print for far too long. nice touch-up on the
cover, and great to see the track indexing fixed. the
album itself is one of nww's greatest moments, though
it's certainly not easy listening. it's like aural
equivalent of a svankmajer animation)

" " " : gyllenskold... (excellent to have the original
LP version of this available. it's not one of nww's
strongest overall, though "dirty fingernails" and
"aquarium" are very good)

more miss than hit:

throbbing gristle : the endless knot. "vow of silence"
is a wonderful track, and "greasy spoon" and the solo
tracks by CC, CFT and PC are all very enjoyable, but
the rest is dull as dishwater. this album pales into
insignifance compared with the THBC and carter tutti
material. "almost a kiss" is by far the worst thing i
have ever heard with the TG name attached to it.

andrew liles : vortex vault. liles seriously needs to
start exercising quality control, sadly most of his
output is now more mediocre than anything else (still,
earlier albums such as "without season", "mother
goose" and "my long accumulating discontent" are
wonderful).

pointless releases of the year:

throbbing gristle : desertshore sessions box set.
uninteresting and unrewarding.

current 93: birdsong in the empire, black ship in the
underworld. another live album and another mediocre
rehash of earlier material to add to c93's
discography, in which the myriad of monotonous live
recordings, alternate album versions which sound
virtually identical to the orginal material, and
sloppy remixes that add nothing to the works threaten
to outnumber the proper albums. i personally dont want
to hear about "black ships" ever again, though the
appalling remix by foetus is due out next year,
possibly the worst thing i have heard in a long time.

radiohead : "free" download album scam.

"whats the appeal" bands of the year:

battles (soul-less trendy wank), sigur ros (coldplay
with sub-radiohead whinging)

Okay,
my favourite album of the year would be either
the sea & cake's moreish 'Everybody'
or
Loren Connors' beautiful, haunted 'Hymn of the North Star'.

After that,
'Person Pitch', and what an amazing rare talent Panda Bear is live too.
Zelienople's staggering 'His / Hers'. If you liked Low's cover of Carnival Queen you owe it to yourself to check this beauty-mongers out. Think Labraford playing some doom heavy drone.
Fridge's awesome 'the Sun'. the fuckin' vibes man. Defined underwhelmig live, in that continuous checking the time way.
Harris Newman's fucking bone dry 'Decorated'. And i await the return of the glorious possiblities of one man with an accoustic guitar.Wait over.
And an album that Newman played on hrsta's latest. Mick Moya returns with your wan out of jackie O motherfucker. She seems to have taken over proceedings. Which sounds fine to me.
'Sex Change' - trans am. Couldn't make head nor tail of this kraut-frat nonsense initially. Fucking love it now.
Julie Doiron. Especially 'yer kids'
!!!
Vic Chesnutt's North star Deserter'. A grumpy cunt live, yet a great album. Great gig too.Performed bya Blistering band who don't wank about.
Alex Delivery's sumptuous 'Star Destroyer'. Except for that hideous last song.
Do Make Say Think's 'You, you're a history in rust' for the most part.
Susan Alcorn's 'and I await the resurrection of the pedal steel guitar' - the year's most puzzling-sounding album.

Just want to point out, hanged up drummer Eric Craven played on three of those albums.

Dissapointing returns:
Wilderness' Vessel States. It's all build up. Still, i love it. 7" was fucking played to death too. by me.
Strawberry jam. Gobbledegook. They were transcendental live though.
Les Savy Fav's let's Make Friends. Despite this they were feetdamagingly good at Crawdaddy and I got to drink and talk shit with Seth jabour for hours after.
parts & labor's 'mapmaker'. What in good jaysus happened here? And fuck off with those vocals.
Low. Call it a day Sparhawk. It's painful. Although I hear Mark Kozelek has produced his new band and it's some pretty dark shit.

Law of diminishing returns

Yet to hear new albums by
Cass mcCombs
Jackie O Motherfucker
which I suspect to kick the fuck out of any superlatives going.

hooray for humans by a mile.
they might be the ugliest bunch of fuckers ive ever seen, but boy do they know how to right a mean tune,,,that one that goes...

WE SAY THESE WORDS OUTLOUD...
