and a little bit about the record/band:
The album was recorded live at Simon’s house, and was engineered, mixed and mastering by Steve Fanagan (Slow Loris/Northstation). This lovely limited edition release from Hefty Horse records will be available on vinyl format and this also includes a free CD with a high quality mp3 version of the album.
The band was originally formed by Simon Dowling (vocals/guitar/harmonica) but has since became a naturally solid live outfit including: Phil Clarke on drums/banjo (Truro Syndicate, Feed the Bears), Neassa Doherty on bass/vocals (The Terribles), Cian O’ Toole on piano/glockenspiel (Sing Song) and Andy Walsh on organ/guitar (I Heart the Monster Hero).
They were brought together a little over a year ago by a mutual love for the uncomplicatedand pared-down 1970s classic country-rock sound. Some of the music nods towards acts such as The Band, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and modern alt. country acts like Richmond Fontaine and Wilco.
Over the past year, they’ve enjoyed both support and headline gigs in venues such as Whelans, Crawdaddy, Anseo, The Tivoli and the Roisin Dubh to name but a handful. They’ve also played alongside many local and international talents such as The Amazing Few, The Hollows, Paul O’ Reilly, Beat Poet, Jenny Lindfors, Rhob Cunningham, Tiger Saw, Toby Goodshank, Dizzy Spells Martian (Anti-Folk), and Whispertown 2000.
In a world where complexity and strangeness has the potential to cause only frenzied confusion (musically and otherwise!), You Kiss By The Book are committed to singing with straightforward ease about their favourite things that include chopping wood, stones, sleep and bears. The influence of Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst and Mark Linkous may also be suggested throughout the songs.
There’s nothing fan dangled about this album! Overall, here is a band that’s fervent about celebrating the organic essentials of playing stripped-down alt. country music. Plans are being etched out for spring gigs so keep an ear to the soil.
