I've just got a Dell Vostro desktop and several times I've Shut 'er down only to find it rebooted. I got a "Windows has Recovered from an unexpected shutdown" message. Would a virus cause this or is vista just shit?

Well check your shut down options and also your power saving options.

Also, check your bios and turn off booting from lan (or whatever it's called these days - it's been a while since delved into my own).

I'd really recommend you get a decent Anti-Virus tool or, better yet, an Internet Security Suite. I use the AVG one which is fairly decent. Windits and all its variants (especially Vista) are a red rag to a bull for these guys.

Oh, and Vista is shit*.

*Okay, it's not that bad, but XP is better. For most tasks.

My new laptop has given me a few BSODs, after rebooting Vista tells me that the problem was caused by Kaspersky.

Typical, blame the foreign sounding program.

Windoze is racist yo.

i can't remember where it is in vista, but check that it's not set to automatically reboot after a bluescreen - on XP it often does it so fast that it appears like a spontaneous reboot, rather than a BSOD and reboot.

Its called PXE these days Goffy baby.
Emm, and it should skip through it, I dunno. Turn it off anyway sure. No harm. Booting off the network is the man though.

Emm. Yeah, Windows in general is utterly shit, although my Vista usage has been little enough.

Get the Ubuntu Livecd, open a live session and dual boot the machine.
Its next to impossible to balls it up, and if you do you have a Recov Disk for windows anyway.

Ubuntu Linux is fucking amazing. Its really that simple.

My desktop used to shut down and reboot randomly. After opening it I discovered that the fan had melted off my nVidia graphics card causing it to overheat.

"Windows has Recovered from an unexpected shutdown"

I've received that message before on my dell laptop. The hard drive crashed days afterwards, you should run dell disk diagnostic just in case.
