Why do you make music and for how long more? (1 Viewer)

when i see people who are clearly well over 30 like daivd lacey and alan o'boyle stinking up venues around town, i kind of wonder why they aren't at home with their wives and kids and shit....i mean grow up, seriously

Pretty soon there will be a need for an Irish independent equivalent of the Wiggles.

I tell ya what, the band I'm in at the moment is about the funnest band I've ever been in..
Mostly, this is because when we were starting up we laid down a manifesto, basically outlining all the shit we didn't like about previous bands we'd been in that made things less fun.
And we banned 'em.
Everyone's happy.

So, now that I know how much fun it is once no one is annoyed at having to do x, or because there ain't enough y or z, I'll keep on rockin for a good long time, I think.

It's such a simple appeal, but it's great to think that a song never existed before you wrote it or that it would never have existed if not for you being on earth. Makes me feel like a God thereby justifying my wrath etc.

Nice way of making your mark on this world long after you're gone.

I can imagine my grandkid digging through stuff in his attic and finding a 'compact disc' of his grandfather's music, dusting it off, bringing it down to a 'compact disc specialist shop, converting it to .MP3946 format, uploading it through a socket in his ear, listening to it on his Microsoft Bio-music player (by double-blinking his eyelids), thinking 'stereo sound' is unlistenable..and then skipping to the new remastered Busted greatest hits.

I can only dream.

no girls allowed, wah?

im lucky enough to be in a band that puts no thought or effort into anything. we never practice and just turn up to gigs with whatever instruments we like and make it up on the spot so that makes things a bit easier, i think, to carry on as long as people will let us play. as for my solo "career", i do very little by myself anymore because i dont have an ideas anymore, or at least any that i feel like pursuing. Hopefully i 'll get some soon though...

i've played and released records/albums for 21 years (yes i'm that old) i think people will only stop when it is no longer fun. if you enjoy what you are doing it doesn't really matter about popular opinion. that said an odd compliment now and then does help. i hope i will be doing it forever, my worst fear is losing my fingers

i've been told i'm a miserable old bastard when i'm not playing music so i better keep doing it.

I play music mainly to stop me from hitting people/crying ie for purely cathartic reasons, which is why I write about one song a year. I don't know what will happen if I stop; I guess I'll go around the streets wailing and thumping people.

they have a website for victims of your violence you know

I'm making loads of money so while this is happening i will continue to play. Its also a lot of fun that doesnt involve computer games or masturbation. It could i suppose

my music is for my own enjoyment, what pleases me (musical masturbating! pure self-indulgence). if others enjoy it, thats a bonus. if they dont it doesnt really bother me. the same energy i put into painting or drawing goes into doing stuff with sound. the two things i look for in music are: a) capability to take one out of mundane reality / to have some sort of mind altering effect, and, b) an emotional power. personally i have a particular preference for drone (timbre based) sounds and spaciousness (dynamic range) in music, so what i do probably reflects that. i have no plans to do anything in a stage / audience live situation currently. the idea of being on stage i find very unappealling and uninteresting at the moment.
