no you don't - that's where the developer mode and the installing the plex client comes in

Cheers @pete i just updated my media server so it can run plex. I don't think it'll do anything extra over XBMC on apple tv but it's a lot cheaper.

one thing to watch out for is connecting the box with anything other than a regular HDMI->HDMI cable, like HDMI->DVI or ->VGA whatever - If there's no HDCP support you won't get any picture.
