WAAJEED

Considering that Waajeed only began making music in 2000, he has already compiled an impressive list of accomplishments including production work for both multi-platinum and underground artists, receiving endorsements from heavyweight producers like Jay Dee and Jazze Pha, as well as being a respected dj, and founding his own label, Bling47.

Waajeed’s first creative medium of choice, the canvas, landed him a full scholarship to the distinguished College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. Waajeed excelled as an illustrator for three years before deciding to leave visual art to explore music. A major impetus for Waajeed’s exploration of music was an offer to dj for his best friends, T3, Baatin, and Jay Dee, bka Slum Village, on their first European Tour. Waajeed, who had been djing since age 14, jumped at the opportunity and returned from the tour with a desire to get behind the boards. By 2000 Waajeed had produced his very first beat tape, which received praises from the members of Slum Village and landed him 4 tracks on their album, Trinity. Waajeed’s work on Trinity was met with much acclaim, including mention in The Source Magazine’s “Hot Tapes,” and led to his producing for multi-platinum German artists, Max Herre and ASD (Afrob and Samy Deluxe), along with a slew of ghost production for some of the industry’s most established names.

In 2002, Waajeed decided that he wanted to start his own record label. Waajeed had already acted as Executive Producer for Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 1 and Dwele’s Rize which sparked international interest in both artists and led to their signing with major labels. To date, Waajeed’s label, Bling47, has released The Official Jay Dee Instrumental Series Vol. 1, The Official Jay Dee Instrumental Series Vol. 2: Vintage, and BPM, Waajeed’s instrumental album. All three albums have received much attention and are regarded as underground classics.

In 2003, Waajeed began working on a concept for an album on which he, as producer, could work with a rotating cast of musicians. The Platinum Pied Pipers were born. Ubiquity Records took interest in the project and Triple P was released in May of 2005 as one of the most successful indie albums of the year, receiving critical acclaim from nearly every major music publication in the market. Most recently their debut album, ‘Triple P’ has been nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ by Gilles Peterson and Radio 1’s World Wide Music Awards.

Presently Waajeed has been commissioned to do a number of remixes for the likes of Roy Ayers, Radiohead, Goapele, and The Herbaliser, and has received interest from Def Jam in working as an in- house producer. As a dj, Waajeed recently released The Universal Language Mix CD for Triple 5 Soul, which has been one of the most sought after and heavily downloaded mixes of the year. Waajeed’s main projects for the moment are completing and releasing Tiombe Lockhart’s and Invincible’s solo projects, which are both slated for release in 2006 on Bling47, along with a project from his newly formed supergroup, The Jazz Kats. With only a short time in the music business and this much already on his plate, Waajeed is definitely an artist to check for in the coming years.
