Hello,
We didn't plan on leaving it this long to play in Cork but it's been a funny year. It's going to be a very different gig to the last time we played on Cork, come along and see.
The national Sculpture Factory are helping Thai Artist Surasi Kusolwong run 'BangCork' by a three day market in The Peace Park off Grand Parade consisting of market stalls, massage, yoga, projections and performance. United Bible Studies have been asked to play on Sunday the 26th of June Between 11am and 5pm. There will be other musicians but we don't know who they are yet. Admission is free.

Here's the story..................
Cork Caucus Presents ‘BANGCORK’ Market

As part of Cork Caucus, Thai artist Surasi Kusolwong has devised a large scale, open-air market, which will take place in Cork, from Saturday, 25th June until Monday, 27th June 2005. This colourful market installation, which is loosely based on a typical Thai street market, will be located in Bishop Lucey Park, right at the heart of the city. The market is one of many projects that the National Sculpture Factory is presenting this summer, as part of Cork Caucus.

Kusolwong’s market is a fusion of performance and installation, with a real live market, creating an interplay between people, art and shoppingis a hybrid market community, which undermines the usually distinct categories of utility and fine art and consists of four parts.plays with ideas of cultural and economic values and the interplay between people art and consumer products. By bringing together typical Thai and Cork products, Kusolwong intends for his market environment to be a space of both social and cultural exchange.

The first section of ‘Bangcork’ is a group market where local traders will sell fresh local produce.

The second section of the market is comprised of individual tents selling books, antiques, handcrafts etc. The traders in both sections will use Surasi’s markets to sell their own products at their own price. Artists and art students will help the traders install the products at each stand, thusfusing ideas of art as a commodity using the products as art materials and and making art part of everyday life.

The third part of the market is a stall entitled ‘Everything the Same Price’, where everyday objects from Thailand will be on sale for a nomimal price. With this installation, Surasi aimsto confront the viewer with massreflects on the conditions of modern global consumer society importing and cheaply bright plastic everyday products, typically on sale from street vendors in Thailand. that we take for granted in the West, but that are a serious means of livelihood in the Using a variety of different forms of presentation, Kusolwong will offer an array of these items, all at the same price.

The fourth and final section of the market takes the form of a social platform, where people can enjoy a cup of coffee and an open discussion. Throughout the project, Surasi will collaborate with people from a variety of professions, local participants and art students.

Bangcork is presented in the spirit of celebration and aims to offer the visitor an interactive, social experience, rather than a passive consuming one, and in doing so emphasising hospitality and cultural exchange. the mixing of European and Asian cultural expectation.
