I used to go for blowies with Floody after talking about operating
systems over a coffee.
Does that count?

I wasn't trying to get at you, Shorty - I know you're not a member.
As you know I did my MSc in UCD a few years ago and in that time I
met quite a few anarchists.
What struck me was that while most of them had benefited from all
of the trappings of a middle class upbringing and a relatively
inexpensive world class third level education, they were still hellbent
on dismantling everything that gave them these opportunities.
Why not try and bring those opportunities to everyone?
I don't think it's possible to give an inexpensive world class
education and hold on to world class lecturers and professors when
you're in the early days of worrying about the logistics of feeding
your new mega-community without importing anything.
You may disagree.
What age you are does not nullify the benefits you had growing up.

Maybe the UCD anarchists can organise an exchange program so a
few of them can go check out Somalia and teach self-sufficiency in
the face of warlordism. The Somalians can earn a degree and spend
the rest of the day enjoying subsidised pints.
EVERYONE WINS.

Student grants and means testing isn't the best (pretty shit tbh), but the re-introduction of fees is socialism in action.

only people who can afford fees will pay for them. i think some degree (ho-ho!) of fee paying is necessary to maintain our high calibre of third level education. where do you forsee all the money coming from?

I think a sizable number of people here have no idea as to the true
value of a second and third level education and the value it holds
around the world.
You even get paid to do a degree when you're over 23 and unemployed.
There are people around the world who would cut off their own limbs
to avail of that opportunity for themselves or their children.
And people here complain.

Hey, it counts. But I don't know anything about his parents, upbringing, etc. and don't have any clue what relevance any of this sociological information has to his current economic position in society, you know the anarchist basis for their analysis?

I know it wasn't a dig, I don't care I'm far too self deprecating/aware/confident/other self-something/etc. for that. :p And besides, my parents are resolutely middle class now despite their lack of benefits growing up. :) You should see their wide sreen TV.
None of this is relevant or important to an anarchist understanding or an understandign of anarchist politics.

I like the weird mix of middle class and first world guilt you have going on as the basis of part of your criticisms. Very punk. :D The other ones dealing with the post revolutionary society are the more difficult, compelling, interesting and boring by the way.

You could equally argue the same of the right to vote or the oxygen infused pan-fried florettes of French Guiana baby cauliflower that you had for meta-brunch but you wouldnt because you'd be mocked. And rightly so.

I base all of this on their accents.
Not fault proof, but in the absence of a daddywealthometer it's all I've got.

No? A group of middle class rebels with working class aspirations espousing values they have no experience in - such as hard labour or factory work, just dreams of an academic research job...
I find it fascinating and hilarious.

I have a unique perspective (not guilt) coming from a working class multi-racial family that ended up obscenely rich and still multi-racial.
My dad spent two years in a refugee camp as a kid after his family escaped Chairman Mao - I'm not messing!
I'm writing a book about my experiences called 'YOU'RE WRONG'.

Yeah, cause being working class is about working in a factory and/or hard manual labour. Bahaha! :) It's about reading the sun, driving a white van, eating breakfast roles, speaking in a particular accent, working on building sites. (I've just described my brother).
Most left wing, let alone anarchist, class analysis would include the sociological middle class in the realm of working class. The middle class guilt doesn't cut it with them and why you don't see them valourising the class in itself or "being" working class or some sort of identity to be "proud" of. Not that this hasn't been the standard one for a long time and probably holds most of these conversations back.

The working class as a revolutionary subject isn't based on their down trodenness, lack of benefits growing up or impoverishment or any of these other lines being trotted out but on their position in society.
Jesus, even if you look at the US presidential election, most of the talk of "the middle class" is defining a working class relationship.

Well, you've got me there haven't you, I'd had better shut up and fuck off. *sigh* Talk to you later.

It's called the race card and as long as the world pretends to
be non-racist and yet reacts in an apologetic manner when
I play it - then I will continue to play it.

Sure I want social justice, but I want a perpetual system of
white guilt too.

well in fairness there, we've really not grown up in a period where we have any comprehension of working class. the term really applies to somthing very different in present day. we have the richest working class in the world more or less.

for example, try comparing working class 00's, 90's, 80's, 70's, 60s. its really an evovling term. like the vauxhall astra, the present model is twice the size of the 80's one. i saw one on tuesday.

Damn right, if you've got it and can use it to your advantage, flaunt it! But at least its not your only good quality.

I've heard you've got a giant penis, though I think that was from you . . . I forget.
