Who is your woman with those doped pricks?

That 338 km stage from Nantes to Bordeaux in 1984....
Rough calculation is that speed was almost exactly 35 kmph for a very long but very flat stage.
From late 50's era of Gaul, Bahamontes, Geminiani and a young Anquetil, the speed of Tours never went up until 1988.
Average winning speed of an 80's TdF winner was 34+ kmph until 1988 (88 Tour was nearly 1000km shorter than 1987 too) but the speed went up at an insane rate until Lance was gone (41 kmph).
In recent years flat stages at nearly 50 kmph and there are Tour winners going about 2 kmph faster than some of Lance's wins.

Today's stage just finished now.
EDIT: cleaned up typos

Sam just has no leadout. He was trying to follow Phillipsen's wheel but totally lost it on the 3rd or 4th last bend. He wasn't even in contention after that. Its soul destroying to watch it. He was trying his best to keep from being boxed in and it just all went to shit for him.

correction, he pulled himself back up to take 6th. Best performance so far but you just have to wonder how he'd do if he wasn't so isolated.
Good effort by Sam really. If the lad who took Bennett's place won in Paris last year then you never know.
EDIT:
Watched it a few times now. Only the lead out men, Philipsen and Ackermann were ahead of Sam going into finishing straight.
Why a load of teams were allowed to change their colours for Tour is beyond me

Didn't watch stage of Tour yesterday live. Was much harder than I expected.

Clara Emond won yesterday's stage of women's Giro with a solo break. The Canadian, who is a barrister, was the along with Megan Armitage, the best rider on Arkea team last year. EF Education signed both riders for 2024.
Cecile U.L. was 3rd after being injured most of the season.
Great battle when Kopecky attacked Maglia Rosa Longo-Borghini in a Strade Bianche style finish - Elisa wasn't having it...

40 years today ago Stage 13 of 1984 was fairly routine...

Breton rider Pierre-Henri Mentheour (b.1960) won in a three man sprint in one of 10 stages Renault won. He retired in 1986.
P-H Mentheour later admitted doping and asked for his French Hour Record to be expunged. Mentheour put this behind him and became a camera man for Eurosport. Unfortunately he died of cancer aged 53.

Pierre Henry's brother Erwann (b.1973) a TT specialist signed for the then new Francais de Jeux team in 1997 and Erwann beat David Millar to win Tour de l'Avenir TT stage before a broken wrist and a failed haematocrit test ended his career.
Erwan promptly wrote a memoir in early 1998 featuring doping and his abuse of narcotics (inc. Pot Belge - total shit concoction of hard drugs). Erwann also released a single which charted in France.
I just googled Erwann and he is a well known in France as a broadcaster, writer and fitness guru...

2nd on stage 13 40 years ago was Dominique Garde. Described by Kimmage as "One of the most respected riders in the peloton", Garde was a cycling Gary Mabutt - He was probably the first icon for diabetics in cycling. Garde was a top domestique for Kelly (@ Skil, Kas) Fignon (System U, Castorama)

3rd place Kim Andersen once finished 3rd and won a stage in the Nissan Classic. He was caught doping several times in his career and even banned for life and later was a manager of dodgy successful teams.

I never heard of this guy...

Bas Maliepaard (1938 - July 2024)
Dutch sprinter who was a team mate of Anquetil and Elliot at St. Raphael.
He was Dutch road champ twice. Maliepaard's career highlight was helping Jacques win the 1963 Vuelta while en route taking 4th on GC, the points jersey and a stage win.
He also finished 2nd in two Tour stages.

The 1984 Tour flashback continues!
Amazingly Bastille Day Saturday 14-7-1984 was a Tour rest day!? Staggering.
So 15 July 1984 was a mountain TT
Fignon pours on the power and Luis 'Lucho' Herrera in his first Tour took 2nd place on another stage.

So 40 years today - Monday 16th July 1984 was historic.
stage 17 Grenoble - Alpe d'Huez

When this was first posted on YouTube there was a lot of emotional responses from Colombians - many of them had never seen this footage. Colombianos remembering what they were doing on that day. It was the Girmay moment of the 1980's.
Hinault was on the ropes at this point and launched a desperate long range attack. Fignon famously said he laughed when he heard Bernie had gone up the road. Lucho Herrera and then Fignon smoshed him on the Alpe.
Another memorable moment was Millar (4th on stage) catching Hinault. Robert sits on Bernie's wheel for a while and Bernie waves his elbow trying to get Millar to come through - Millar does just that and rides away from Hinault.
And four Colombianos in the top 11 on the stage no less.
Kelly lost 9 minutes and any hope of finishing on the podium dropping to 12th on GC.

After 12 days in yellow Barteau finally ceded the jersey to his Renault team mate.

Deifnitely Sam's best sprint so far. Not sure of his finishing position but he was well up there.

Girmay crashed out with 1.3km to go
4th for Bennett. Sam might have got 2nd if he had Philipsen's wheel but JP was by far the best.

What a disappointment for Biniam Girmay. He was 82 points ahead (376) of Philipsen and only 32 now after he won (344). A top five finish today and Girmay would have been nearly certain of green in Paris - just had to finish.
Hope he is OK. Bini came across line a few minutes later.
